Welcome to the collection: D’Angelo’s “Brown Sugar”

On his debut album, we can hear the foundations of the neo-soul movement that so many modern day artists have borrowed and made their own. It honors its RnB roots while covering “Cruisin’”, a Smokey Robinson track from the late 70’s. It’s a refreshing reminder that no music is ever really new, and that there’s always room on the record shelf for more baby-makin’ music.

Ever keep an album for the artwork? 🖼 One of the keys to record collecting is curation, especially when space is limited. Although the music comes first, I find that if the album art is iconic, unique, and beautiful then it should have a space on my shelf. This incredible copy of Oscar Pettiford on the Bethlehem label is all of these things. Ever time I come across it while browsing my Jazz section I’m drawn to it. The color, the posture, and the music, all of it is perfect.

I’ve been on the hunt for YEARS trying to find this album, and finally, “Darrell Banks Is Here!”

Finding gems like this “in the wild” feels extra special, and this album is indeed special. This LP came from a collection I found out in Iowa, and although it wasn’t the goldmine I was hoping for, finding this rare original mono press of one of my white whales was absolutely the highlight. Not perfect condition by any means, but even a crispy copy like this with the character and history of 56 years is a crown jewel for my record collection 👑

What did Santa bring you this Christmas?? 🎅🎁🎄
When I found out that my best friend’s college mentor had lost his wife’s Beatles albums in a house fire, I made it my mission to find all of them before the holidays. Sure enough, I was able to curate a near complete collection of all of the records she had lost (and then some!) He sent me this picture from Christmas Day of all of the framed albums on display for her to discover and, naturally, respond like any kid on Christmas who gets the gift of a lifetime 😱😱😱
