This is 29.

For a long time, I have wanted more purpose in my life. There’s way more to life than just the day-to-day and I found that purpose this year whenever I became a mama.

It truly feels like my whole identity now, as it should… but here are some things I’m enjoying in this season more than ever before:

Cooking wholesome meals
Meal prepping
Getting back to reading again (I’ve been missing my romance novels)
Being a homebody, but realizing that I’m SO ready to travel again
Brainstorming about business and HUGE changes
Quality time with my little love and husband
Working out to gain my strength back
Finding more of my style postpartum

The list goes on. I am just really excited for what the last year of my 20s will bring. I think it’s gonna be my favorite year yet.

And I’m so thankful for this business that allows me to live my life to its fullest. I will never be taking that for granted. 🥹🫶🏼

If you have a different life than me, you should have a different business model than me…

Because that’s what it’s all about, isn‘t it?

Building the dream life?

For some of you that will genuinely look like shooting 30 weddings per year because that’s what you want.

Others it will look like book 3-5 weddings per year, and having a team shoot the rest.

Others will go into education…

Others will prefer shooting lifestyle sessions instead of just niching into weddings.

But here’s the thing:

- Not one of those is better than the other.
- Not one of those makes more money than the other.
- I don’t teach one of those better than the other.

I work with my students to look at their business from the perspective of what they want their life to look like. Then you can determine how your business goals fit into that dream and what it takes to get you there with support along the way.

Here’s what slow and steady really means in business:

While the hare is jump sprinting ahead with their income from their latest discount offered, only to shortly crash to having no new leads…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The tortoise is slowly making his way to the finish line while without really accelerating at all or changing how he’s doing things… leading to discouragement over and over again.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Neither are ideal, and a lot of people move like the tortoise.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you are building the foundation of your business you are learning new skills, practicing them, and implementing them…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All the while your business growth starts to accelerate with the momentum you are building.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But if you aren’t learning new skills and just strutting on by hoping for the best like a tortoise, it’s going to take you forever to get there.

Behind everything I do in my business, I have to share that my husband is an absolute rock for me.

Garrett holds the non-official titles of business consultant, behind the scenes support, grammar checker, confidant, and more. From the big things like helping me with business decisions or investments, to packing my lunch for me on a wedding day, I couldn’t do this business without him.

4 years ago now, he supported me taking this leap and going full-time.

Yesterday, I was running through every decision and accomplishment that’s gotten me to where I am now, and I know his support is a major piece in the success I’ve had.

I feel peace knowing his support is only going to continue in this transition into motherhood and entrepreneurship, because I do feel called to both (once I’ve had time to soak up all of the newborn snuggles, of course 🥹).

So just know that if you have one of these support persons for yourself, love ‘em a lot and never take them for granted. They’re an underrated asset as an entrepreneur, in more ways than one.

Going viral could be pointless for your business…

Use the “over-saturation” to your advantage!

I had a conversation about this with a student the other day...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Living in a big city, she felt like there were too many photographers to stand out from and too many undercutting her prices.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I got real with her for a second and told her this:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The more saturated an industry gets doesn’t mean the same number of photographers are vying for your dream couples.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Meaning… there are a lot of people who think it’s easy to be a photographer, so they start (and we love this for them), but there is no way they will be marketing to the same clientele at the beginning, regardless of their pricing or anything else.

This is why your pre-booking client experience is so CRUCIAL so that you can be immediately supportive, attentive, and stand out from all the others they inquired with that very day.

It was not easy when I moved to Colorado.

I had already started building a name for myself in Tennessee. I had referrals and repeat clients.

So I would be lying if the idea of moving didn’t scare me a bit with the fact that I might’ve potentially had to go back to nursing.

But I wasn’t about to WAIT for people to book me so I could build my portfolio.

Because when you don’t have a strong portfolio or your marketing isn’t reflecting the kind of clients you want to shoot, you likely won’t be building a strong portfolio, but rather shooting whatever comes your way.

After arranging my own styled shoots, I had control over the flowers, the dress, and the overall vibes so that I had photos that would attract those who wanted to go in the same or similar direction with their wedding.

And let me tell you, it was worth every penny (and creating your own costs waaay less than most styled shoots).
