The Robert and Judi Newman Center opened its doors in 2002 and has been acclaimed as one of the nation's finest university performing arts centers. Unique in the region for its size, acoustic quality, and programming, the Newman Center is dedicated to showcasing cultural diversity, stretching the imagination, and stimulating dialogue through the performing arts.

The $70 million Newman Center made its official debut on Friday, April 18, 2003 with a sold-out gala featuring mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horn and bass Hao Jiang Tian. Distinguished guests included former DU Chancellor Dan Ritchie, Judi and Bob Newman, Sharon Magness, Cleo Parker Robinson and Joy Burns. The Villager newspaper called the gala opening “the most spectacular nonprofit event in metro Denver’s recent history” while the Rocky Mountain News commented on the “fine acoustics, along with a quality virtually unknown in Denver concert halls – intimacy.” The Denver Post described the Newman Center “as a gem,” helping the “city attract talent that simply never came here before.”

IN MEMORIAM: We are deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary tabla virtuoso, Zakir Hussain. Celebrated for his exceptional skill and innovative approach to Indian classical music, Hussain was given the title “Ustad,” or “master.” Hussain’s work transcended genres, from classical Indian musicians to jazz, world music, and more, creating a unique fusion of sounds. His legacy as an ambassador of Indian culture will live on for years to come. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends, fellow artists, and all who were inspired by this extraordinary talent.

Join us at the Newman Center next month for an extravagant performance from Music From The Sole: I Didn’t Come to Stay

Music From The Sole is a tap dance and live music company that celebrates tap’s Afro-diasporic roots, particularly its connections to Afro-Brazilian dance and music, and it lineage to forms like house dance and passinho (Brazilian funk). Led by Brazilian dance/choreographer Leonardo Sandoval and by bassist/composer Gregory Richardson, their work embraces a blend of sound and movement, with a mission of bringing tap dance, America’s vernacular dance form, to new audiences. Since their first performances in 2014, Music From The Sole has appeared at the Lincoln Center, Jacob’s Pillow, Tap in Rio and the Vail Dance Festival.

Are you excited for Meow Meow tonight at the Newman Center?

Come read what critics are saying:

🌹“She’s b***y and brash, tender and vulnerable; she’s graceful and klutzy, commanding and helpless. She’s a singer who hits every vocal nuance, whether serious or satiric; a high-energy dancer who could probably double as a contortionist; a comic who draws roars from pratfalls, subtle glances, punchlines and sensuality. She calls herself Meow Meow and—need I say this after that lead-in—she’s wonderful.” - Huffington Post

🌹“The voice alone is glorious in its range and texture. But combine it with carefully chosen songs, superb comic timing, improvisational wit, and some engaging audience participation, so cannily conducted that you suspect a degree in psychology, and you have an evening that demonstrates that Meow Meow really is the cat's whiskers.” - The Guardian
