Iowa Series has been a year long process. My series is a personal project that speaks about self discovery and identity. Born in Des, Moines , Iowa as a latino youth is not easy. How does one Identify in a world where speak english only is common, while being cancelled for only speaking english is a possibility? As an outsider looking into the land I call home, I often question my role as the black sheep of Des Moines. This series has been a self reflection of my experiences, as a youth, as an adult, as a father, as a community contributor. I search for my right to stand in a city that does not understand me nor I understand it. My search has lead me to working with many organizations and many discussions of who I should be. I am Chicano and as one, it's my mission to walk against the current. There are many who experience the stigma of where do I fit in. My mission is solely for me to answer where I fit.

The pursuit of Latino/a representation in the realm of professional Gallery Fine Artists has been a formidable challenge. Yet, Iowa has experienced an influx of artists from the Latino/a community. The Latino Heritage Festival this year features a dedicated tent to showcase these skilled professionals, marking a significant milestone in Iowa's growth. It's been a struggle, but establishing a lasting impact for future generations is a privilege. When our time concludes, others will need a platform, making it an honor to provide opportunities for artists seeking recognition. This year heralds a new chapter in Iowa's growth, emphasizing the importance of consistent effort in building community. It's about providing a voice for children and adults who aspire to be recognized as artists. I extend my sincerest appreciation to the Iowa's Latino Heritage Festival l organizers and Colectivo Luchart for their steadfast support.

The original idea was to create an event where we highlight a neighborhood and bring neighbors together using art. However, many obstacles surfaced, and it became problematic. As a Chicano, I grew up not having the opportunity to experience art the way we brought it on June 12th. Those that opposed said nobody would show up to a Latino event. This wasn't a Latino event, it was a Iowan event!
I grew up never knowing a Mexican American can be an artist, and yet here we are. I know many Latino artists changing that narrative in Iowa.
Bienvenidos A Des Moines opened many doors.
Thank you to all for giving hope to the future.

We all did the Conga to make a large mural size hand carved print, and that was the most magical thing I could have dreamed up and watch unravel.
Free food, free art and free entertainment for families!

Did you see the magic tonight? A middle school drop out, single parent determination, seen families celebrating for First Friday. Thank you to everyone that pulled through. I know it wasn't just me, it was so many valuable supportive peers that helped make this a success in my opinion. Thank you to my community!

The latest update to My Series Lost Chicano Tribe. I hit on Social Racism, Racial stereotypes, and prejudice amongst ourselves. Yet I often try to find hope in the midst of the pain. This work will be updated and formatted to fit Ankeny Art Center July 25th. Check out the Chicano Blvd. Opening show! Thank you to my @followers and @topfans, especially my community! I'm not from here. I don't speak your language fluently. I ride on wave lengths that only I can understand. I explode with a force filled with passion for who l am. You may try your hardest to avoid me, you can try to silence me, my spirit is stronger than realized. I don't need your labels, my force understands fully what I am. This world is not my planet. I do not need to be shared. Just know where ever I am meant to be I will be there. The only thing to stop me is the power of this universe. No soy de aqui. No hablo tu idioma con fluidez. Viajo sobre longitudes de onda que sólo yo puedo entender. Exploto con una fuerza llena de pasión por quien soy. Puedes hacer todo lo posible por evitarme, puedes intentar silenciarme, mi espíritu es más fuerte de lo que crees. No necesito tus etiquetas, mi fuerza entiende plenamente lo que soy. Este mundo no es mi planeta. No necesito que me compartan. Solo sé que donde sea que deba estar, allí estaré. I found a family not bound by blood. I found youth to mentor without being paid by anybody or an organization. I in fact was the one paying money to mentor a new generation. What is powerful in my opinion, was watching these youth navigate life. Not one youth I have met knew about the Artist Studio Mainframe Studios. Latino youth were not walking the halls where I made Art. Students from high-schools and middle schools questioned whether they too can make Art, they echoed, we can do that? Yes, we can and we have been making beautiful Art for 1000 of years. Iowa is finally growing, yet the struggle to bring Latino youth to the table continues. Today is a success tomorrow is another story waiting to be told. Bienvenido Des Moines.

The true power of Art is escaping the mundane. The ability to begin in one medium and transcend to another is a powerful superpower. The ability to change is what sets us apart! Des Moines North Side Highland Park Mural By Seso Marentes Vandalism plagued the streets. F*** Black lives matter scribbled on so many walls. A family of color was walking by to purchase grocery's at a local shop and felt hurt that they were compelled to cover their young childrens eyes. The father looked down and shook his head with sadness he had a sadness to his eyes while covering his little boys eyes from the hatefilled graffiti. The only thing to do was to cover these words with the power of the heart! The church next doors as it was being painted offered free food and support for the new Artwork. In order to break hate we must answer with love. -Seso Marentes
