Food scraps make up a significant portion of municipal solid waste in the United States. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), food waste accounts for about 20% of all the waste that ends up in landfills. This means that out of the 292 million tons of municipal solid waste generated every year, approximately 58 million tons are food scraps.

This amount of food waste not only takes up valuable space in landfills, but it also has negative environmental impacts. As food decomposes in landfills, it produces methane gas, which is a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

In addition to the environmental impact, food waste also has economic consequences. The USDA estimates that food waste costs the United States about $218 billion annually, including costs for production, transportation, and disposal.

We would like to inform you that today, Monday, January 22, our pick-up routes will be running shorter than usual. This is due to the icy road conditions we are currently experiencing. The safety of our drivers and the community is our top priority, and as such, we have made the decision to pull our trucks off the roads. Our Bloomington Recycle Center and Urbana Transfer Station will also be closed today.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we must prioritize the safety of everyone involved. As a result, we ask that our residential customers leave their trash and recycling cans out for pick-up at a later date this week. We will make every effort to ensure that all cans are collected as soon as possible.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding during this inclement weather. We are committed to providing reliable and efficient service, and we will do our best to catch up on pick-ups as soon as weather conditions allow.
