Hey, friends. It's come to my attention that I've been remiss in posting PSAs about the dangers of black henna. A friend recently purchased 'organic' henna cones on Amazon to play around with. These cones stained black. RED FLAG!!!
🚩🚩 HENNA IS NEVER BLACK🚩🚩
Natural henna smells organic, like fresh hay or grass, maybe with floral or spicy essential oil notes. It will never smell like chemicals. Natural henna stains a reddish-brown, and will always take at least two days to oxidize to the darker tones. Chemical henna gives an immediate deep stain, and can be dangerous to the point of triggering allergies or causing chemical burns. Avoid-avoid-avoid!

Ask your henna artist if they make their own henna. If they do, they will be happy to tell you the ingredients they use. If they cannot answer this question or act defensive, you can assume they are using chemical henna. If it stains dark immediately, chemical warning. If it smells like chemicals, bad news.
