- This weeks fun plant is a tropical beauty known as a Bromeliad. A colorful specimen , Bromeliads need indirect sunlight, temperatures between 60 and 85 degrees F, once a week watering in the little cup formed by it's leaves and soil on the dry side. While they only live for 3-4 years, they will show off a stunning bloom for 6 months before birthing little Bromeliad babies suitable for re-potting-. Some fun facts for you - Pineapples are a type of Bromeliad, as is Spanish Moss (which used to be comfy mattress stuffing a long time ago - hmmmm). Give this easy and beautiful conversation starter a try!

- Martagon Lilies, also known as Turk's Cap Lilies, are showy beauties known for being graceful, natural and easy to grow. These 3-4 foot tall lilies thrive in dappled light and appreciate a dusting of lime to sweeten the soil and encourage prolific blooms. A glance through antique gardening books depicts the Martagon Lily as a classic choice in old style cottage gardens and they are magnificent as cut flowers. Plant these bulbs 6" deep in the fall - they naturalize well over time. A fun Lily fact - the world's oldest lily was found fossilized in Brazil - wait for it - it's age was determined to be 115 million years! It even survived the extinction of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago! Now that's a fun plant...

- What's a Fritillaria, you ask? Well, it's a hardy little plant that belongs to the lily family and is well-adapted to various climates and challenging conditions.
Symbolizing respect and remembrance, the bell-shaped flowers of Fritillaria are very attractive to bees and butterflies who are drawn to their nectar-rich blooms. By attracting pollinators, Fritillaria plays a crucial role in supporting the ecosystem. Fritillaria flowers come in a gorgeous range of sizes and shapes, can bloom for several weeks, and will brighten up your gardens with their vibrant colors and delightful fragrance.
Fritillaria bulbs (plant them in the fall) require well-drained soil and a sunny location. They prefer moist conditions but can tolerate dry spells. Protect them with a blanket of mulch in winter and they will be back to delight you year after year! All in all, a simply captivating flower that will capture your heart!

- Hyacinths! Full size, Wood Hyacinths, Grape Hyacinths - all are surprisingly simple and beautiful to grow. Each long lasting flower has a unique fragrance often used in the perfume industry. Plant 6-8 weeks before a hard frost and tuck them 6-8" deep. Water in well and then wait with bated breath until amazing blossoms arrive in March and April. Another "fun fact" - Hyacinths are part of the Asparagus family - imagine that!

.- The fascinating thing about the more than 400 species of Sedum (also known as Stonecrop) is that they are actually little environmentally conscious geniuses when it comes to water storage and conservation. Unlike most other plants, they can utilize water stored in their cells and drastically reduce evaporation. This genetic property gives Sedums a real advantage during dry conditions. While these fun plants are easy to care for, long lived, and attractive to pollinators, it is their all season color and style that might just make you fall in love! Symbolizing peace, perseverance and calmness, this special plant is definitely worth a try!

- Looking for some amazing instant gratification? Give Autumn Crocus (Colchicum) a try! Although it’s flowers resemble spring Crocus, it is actually a member of the lily family. Hailing from Europe, Asia and North Africa, this lovely little plant is a symbol of hope and renewal. Plant the corms in early fall, pointed side upward, and be prepared to be delighted within a few weeks!
