A little late but Dahlia season has begun in Southern Vermont.

Snapdragons, Sweet Peas and Amaranth - the garden has begun to pay me back for all the hard work!

The new peony garden is almost done. Thanks to the grandkids for helping out. The outside dahlia garden is doing great and sending out multiple shoots after being pinched. The inside dahlias are growing like mad and the chrysanthemums are ready for netting. The hard work is almost done and soon the blooms will be here.

Now that the dahlias and Chrysanthemums are all pinched and growing it’s time to turn my attention to the new Peony gardens. The original annual gardens are being dug up, amended and covered until fall arrives so I can move my old peonies to the new space. They have been in their bed for too many years and need to be divided. The peonies planted two years ago will stay where they are so I can harvest some next spring and then they too will be moved. A new batch of peonies are arriving this fall and will be planted in the new garden. The sweet peas are starting to grow in leaps and bounds and next year they will have their own garden protected from the wind. It’s all starting to come together. As a newbie flower farmer it’s so satisfying to finally see the base structure of my farm in real time instead of just in my head.

Gardens everywhere!
Grandkids are in for two months so we planted some veggie gardens. We are having so much fun with them. The dahlias and chrysanthemums all got
pinched back and except for a few are growing big and strong. Work has now begun on the rest of the old riding ring for next years expansion of the dahlia gardens. My red poppy
came back strong - hoping to collect seeds. The old annual gardens are going to be torn up and become the new peony gardens. And we have been adopted by a cat who watches over my gardens - we have named it Nacho the protector. We have no idea if it’s a boy or a girl.

550 Dahlias outside are complete with netting and the upper tags. Now on to the 50 dahlias in the hoop house and the 100 chrysanthemums which are growing like crazy. On another note the dogwood and peach tees are filled with honeybees.

Dahlia planting today. Holes burned, irrigation and tags all ready for the tubers. 50 more chrysanthemums to get in the ground and then the annuals. Loving this beautiful weather in southern vermont!

We did a test run this year on growing tulips. It was Flying Pig vs the deer - we won! 700 tulip bulbs ordered for next year.

Busy week and it was only Wednesday. Top soil and more horse/cow compost deliveries were and made it possible to work on the new dahlia garden. Three rows completed, three rows in need of top soil and a second tilling and three rows in need of a first till then top soil and a second rolling. Room for 900 plants!!! Phew!

Busy day at the farm. We started the dahlia beds and we are really happy they sit on top of a sand base. This will give them really good drainage. The posts were installed for the vine garden and we got the first bouquet of heirloom narcissus!

51 varieties of Chrysanthemums arrived and are acclimating before going in to the hoop house with the ranunculus. Two more rows are being added to the annual garden and work has begun on the new perennial gardens and the expanded dahlia garden. So excited for this years blooms!

It’s been a quiet winter but now it’s time to wake up the dahlia tubers. The varieties that did not produce great tubers are being propagated for cuttings.

It’s been a crazy time trying to get the farm wrapped up for winter. All the dahlias are tucked away for the winter and the beds are ready for the spring. Now it’s time to sit back and start shopping for next years seeds and tubers.

Dahlias are starting to bloom and the colors are amazing. The lily garden is exploding with color and smell and the zinnias are about to show themselves. The Snapdragons are just beautiful.
