Sometimes you need to make the best of an undesirable location... in post production. This is a technique called "rotoscoping," where the primary action is cut out of the scene to be placed within another. We didn't want the cluttered workspace detracting from the apparatus or operator in the shot, thus it was replaced with a gradient background. This effect is also achieved with green or blue screen background with another technique called chroma-keying.
