“He’s everything that policing deserves and needs.”

The first 911 calls for “shots fired” inside of a Boulder, Colorado supermarket started coming in around 2:30pm yesterday afternoon. The gunman began randomly shooting customers in the store with a rifle. Officer Eric Talley responded to the chaotic scene within just a few minutes, and immediately ran toward the sound of the gunshots. Eric was fatally wounded as he valiantly charged into the line of fire to try and save the individuals inside. That suspect killed a total of ten people before he was shot and wounded by other officers, ending his rampage.

Officer Eric Talley had proudly served the citizens of Boulder since 2010, and leaves behind a wife and seven children, ages 7 through 20. He originally worked in the technology field, but decided late in life to follow a career path in law enforcement because he felt a higher calling. Eric was described as a generous man who would do anything to help anyone. He cared deeply about his community and was willing to give his life without hesitation so others could live. Officer Talley loved his family more than anything, and even taught his kids how to save someone else’s life. Just two weeks ago, one of Eric’s sons was honored with an award by the Boulder Police Department after the boy provided lifesaving measures to his younger brother who was choking. Officer Eric Talley was 51-years old.
