Steeple Square Steeple Square is the perfect venue for your next event! Steeple Square is the former St. The former St. Helen Huewe Culinary Kitchen.

Mary's Church campus located in Dubuque, Iowa on the block of White and Jackson Streets between 15th and 16th Streets. A non-profit organization, Steeple Square's mission is to serve as a collaborative, inclusive center providing opportunities for community support, social life and cultural growth. Mary's church is now the Steeple Square Community Event Center, which includes Honkamp Hall, the Sis

ters of Charity BVM Community Center, the McCoy Multipurpose Room and the Sr. This unique, stunning and versatile space is available for rent for events such as wedding ceremonies, receptions, family celebrations, business events, celebrations of life, education, vocational training, meetings, etc. The former rectory is now the Marita Theisen Childcare Center, providing safe, loving childcare to ages 6 weeks to preschool. We also offer free 4-year old preschool. In partnership with Opening Doors, the former school is now the Francis Apartments, offering both market-rate apartments and affordable housing for graduates of the Opening Doors' program. All of this was possible with the generosity of time, talent and treasure of greater Dubuque and other supporters across the country who desired to repurpose this iconic campus into effective use for our community.

The Steeple Square board of directors is deeply saddened by the loss of our board member, Duane Hagerty, CEO and president of Heritage Works Dubuque. With his passion and knowledge of historical preservation, Duane was instrumental in the saving and restoring of the former St. Mary's Church campus, so beautifully described in the article below. Some of our board members sharing their thoughts:

"Duane was a tremendous asset to the historical restoration, and he will be sorely missed." Judy Wolf, board president

"Duane was instrumental in securing funds at the beginning stages of Steeple Square. He was the number one advocate for historic restoration in our community and his knowledge immense. We were extremely blessed to have had his involvement in Steeple Square." Jack McCullough, board past-president

"Duane was a difference maker. I look at what Steeple Square is today versus what the former church campus may have been had Duane not reached out to convey the historical significance of the building. May he rest in peace." Rick Runde

"Duane was such an important gift to Dubuque-land. Friends who come here remark on the historical preservations they see, in part due to Duane." Sr. Mary Lechtenberg

On a drive through Dubuque, it’s hard to miss the results of Duane Hagerty’s work.
