Jo Jo – my term of endearment as a friend.

JOANNE!!! – my term of endearment as a boss (but we all know you were the boss).

“Mama” – my term of endearment when you lovingly acted the mother to me.

It has now been a week since you left us and it has taken me this long to corral my thoughts and emotions, to be able to come here and pay you tribute. I will both say not enough and then too much.

I made your final tributes in flowers just over a day ago and felt privileged to be able to carry you to your final resting place as a pall bearer. I have held back my tears but will now enjoy their release as I type and glimpse the faces of all who attended your service and as I think to all the Padre spoke to in your eulogy.

I have had a running eulogy with you all week long and wholly suspect that you were there the whole time to hear it. The same way I know you were there when my eyes flew open at 2 in the morning and I heard you say, “Get up and make the flowers for me now.” I tried to argue with you at that moment. I tried to plead for fifteen more minutes of sleep, but you would not have it. I listened to you and went into the studio to create your final designs with all your favorite flowers. (Except for the Ginestra as it isn’t available now even though I think I heard you yelling at me for that. To which I replied God called you home at the wrong time of year to use your favorite flower.)

I used the lush pink peony which you love. I used the Faith roses to honor the unshakable faith you carried with you. I used the garden-style roses as a nod to the gardens at your home that you were proud of. I used the calla lilies (and remembered the time you made a bridal bouquet with the large ones many years ago.) I used the garden-type blooms you loved, the larkspurs and delphiniums and even found the veronica you loved so much. Of course, I used fragrant waxflower and fragrant stock. And orchids, plenty of dendrobium and cymbidium orchids, to honor the part of you that loved the finer things in fashion and creativity. I used a regal purple ribbon, a color fitting for the station you were held to by all who knew you.

Many years ago, I called upon the owner of Twigs who was looking to sell it months before and asked if she was still interested in selling it. She said that if I didn’t take over by the end of the weekend that she would be closing the doors, going out of business. I thought I was taking over a failing business and building a future for my family, but the reality is that I was truly gaining the addition of an amazing human being in my life. You would joke that both you and Austin came with the business. You wanted me to change the name because it was so beat up but when I explained that I loved the name because it reminded me of my children being an offshoot of my wife and I, twigs off of a branch, you cheered for us.

You adopted me. You adopted my wife and my three children. You did what you’ve always done. You loved without condition and reckless abandon. You never judged, you understood. And offered the greatest in advice born out of this amazing discernment you possessed. You never missed an opportunity to be truthful, to share the glimpses into the future that you could always see. (I still don’t know how you did this most times.) You never held back, no matter how difficult the subject or how difficult the direction it would take or where it might land us. You truly were a sage. We argued and we fought. And you always won! You were always right no matter how much I protested. Eventually I would abandon the effort of arguing with you.

As a designer you pushed me and praised me at the same time. You pointed out when I was crazy for trying new things but stood behind me and pushed me to do it. I don’t think you know how deeply you inserted yourself into my backbone.

We had the commonality of having families deeply steeped in the floral industry and quickly came to see that our work, our designs, and our work habits were old-school and near identical. I once told you that I couldn’t make a bridal bouquet because I wanted to see you make one. The day I made one you yelled at me because I lied to you. What you didn’t know was that I was intimidated by your experience and wanted to grow in ability as you did. You were a wonderful teacher from behind the bench for me. My greatest times designing blooms was when we stood side by side on a daily basis as creatives.

We, Gale, Scott, and David included, teased you while working. To the point of exhaustion. Unplugging the cord on your phone and watching you walk around with it dangling. I didn’t care that we lost the call or the sale, it was worth seeing you happy! Encouraging Roxy, our yellow Lab, to take the flowers off your bench and run away with them. Taking your half-finished design off your bench when you walked away only to return and have you yell at us. You never stopped smiling the whole time. The baseline was always this profound love, spoken and unspoken.

When I see the color pink I will always hear you say, “Pink pink, you stink.” And when I see the color yellow I will hear your voice saying “Yellow yellow, kiss a fellow.”

You were there through some of the toughest times in my life and always listened to every bit that was inside of me. You did this not only as a sage, but I believe to show me how to do the same. To show me that healthy love is indeed without conditions attached to it. Your endless counsel in every area of my life was always most welcomed. (Did I mention that you were always right?)

You suffered physically these past couple of years and in those moments when I was called to the hospital, I watched your face light up when I walked into the room. What you didn’t know and perhaps could not see was that my heart grew in my chest in an equal manner when I visited. You spoke of God and faith and wore this on your sleeve. You expressed that “you wanted to go home” many times and now you are there. I am confident that the peace you are in now is as brilliant as the spark that was in those beautiful eyes that were the window to your kind and gentle soul. You’re home.

Though we will feel this loss here for some time, and sadness may be felt, on the backside of it there will always be this profound love and gratitude for having known you and having had you here with us. Humanity has lost a most colorful and extremely powerful thread in its fabric but I’m confident that your energy will continue to inspire us from above.

Now I know I have left out so so much as I know that all the lessons you tried to pass on to each of us, sometimes without words, will continue for my lifetime. As they present themselves, I will look up and acknowledge your lasting and powerful presence in my life.
On behalf of my wife and children and those who were there as we journeyed together for a bit; we want to say thank you. We love you!

Jo Jo – I thank you for being the best of friends with an admirable unconditional love.

JOANNE!!! – Please watch over all of us and act the guide from above when necessary.

Mama – I love you and I thank you. You knew every nuance about me. You knew I did not have the chance to design flowers for my own mother when she passed but designing yours felt the way it would have had I been able to do that.
