Hello flower friends. Hard to believe it's been a year... and what a year it's been. Hope you are all well

Friends, I have some news…..
Recently, we received an offer on the property here on Burnside Ave. This was not something we anticipated or were actively looking for, but nonetheless, it’s something that was presented to us. After much consideration, sleepless nights and a lot of discussion, we have decided to accept it and sell the property. In doing so, we have also decided to close the flower shop as well. During these insane and crazy times of Covid and with so much uncertainty for the future, this allows my parents to fully and comfortably retire. Additionally, I feel that it’s time for me to make some changes. Please believe me when I tell you that I have struggled with this decision, but I honestly believe that it’s the best decision for me and my family and it was not made lightly. My heart is breaking apart but I’m also excited for a new future and a new adventure, whatever that may end up being.
(Un)Fortunately, the people buying the property are extremely anxious to close on the deal and are moving very quickly. We had originally anticipated finishing out the year, but that doesn’t seem possible at this point. As it stands now, our last day open for business will be Sat. Nov 14 and then we will be closing (and cleaning out .. so much cleaning out. 60 years of cleaning out). We had hoped to be part of your Thanksgiving table and Holiday gift giving one last time, but we are unable to do that. I’m really sad about that and am trying to see the bigger picture.
We have been a part of the East Hartford (and beyond) community for over 60 years. We are proud of the flowers we’ve shared with you and how we’ve been a small part of your big events. We cherish the customers who are now dear friends and appreciate the trust you’ve put in us for so many years.

Today I start a new chapter as I begin my new job. I received a few job offers immediately after announcing the shop's closing, which was extemely flattering. I accepted a permanent part time position at Michelle's Florals in Vernon. I am very excited to start this morning and think this will be a great fit for me. I hope you will feel comfortable in following me there for all your floral needs near and far. Right now, Michelle's doesn't have any social media, maybe I can change that?? I still have a gallery of pics I'll use here and see where we go from there. Wish me luck as I start my first ever job other than Buettner Florist!!

Some trivia for you....
Back when my grandfather first was in business, he created and designed a wedding bouquet holder. I'm sure you're familiar with the modern bouquet holder of a plastic handle with the foam base. At that time, wet foam wasn't available. My grandfather created this system of moss, wrapped and then attached to the plastic mold and handle he had designed. He would ship them all over the country. My father remembers getting home from the flower shop and then going down to the basement to make all the holders. At this time, sadly, my grandfather's daughter, Myra Lee was very sick with leukemia. They had to take her to weekly appointments in Boston (remember this was in the 50's.. so that trip was a big deal) and had huge medical bills. (sadly, she passed away at the age of 10) He wanted to apply for the patent on his design, but didn't have the extra $50 to get one. Within probably 10 years or so, wet foam was invented and the new bouquet holders- with a very similar design- became the standard for wedding bouquets.

27 years ago, I married my high school sweetheart. I designed my own wedding bouquet. I would definitely do something different today, but I loved it then and the fact that I did my own wedding flowers

Anyone that knew my grandfather, knows that he was a very talented wood craftsman. He spent HOURS whittling and creating other things. Back in the 60's and 70's he made dollhouses. Some, he would spend literally months on to donate for raffles or other charities. When we sold their house a few years back, we found this treasure. The roof is actual shingles, it's got vinyl siding, wood trim, a stone fire place and carved stair case and so much attention to detail. Of course, like any older house, it's in need of some TLC, but the workmanship and detail is amazing. We've realized that we can't take it with us with the closing. It has huge sentimental value and we truly would love for someone who would appreciate it and want to restore it to make us an offer on it. I would hate to see it put in storage. Please share this or call if you have any interest. (serious offers only, please)

Gut punch of the day. We will be selling our big display cooler. It makes total sense, but how do I not cry when I see the markings of my girls growing up? So many memories in such weird places!
