Magnolia Manor’s New Look
Historic mansion and event venue on the Tred Avon River receives interior makeover

Easton, Md. – Magnolia Manor, a historic mansion on the Tred Avon River, is undergoing an interior redesign with the help of local Easton business, Bountiful Home. Carol Wheeler, lead Interior Designer, has taken on the project, focusing on the living room, the screened porch, and the outside patio. These spaces have been redecorated with new furniture and accents that reflect and highlight Magnolia Manor’s historical architectural character.
“My goal was to make an inviting space to welcome any guest that would walk through Magnolia Manor,” said Wheeler. “We brightened up the venue by updating the traditional pieces with a more updated and inviting look. We used lighter blues and grays, creating an airy and vibrant feel. The furnishings are still in keeping with the history of the Manor, but with a fresh transitional twist.”
Magnolia Manor is one of only a few residentially commissioned asymmetrical villa-style houses designed by Richard Upjohn, the British-born American architect associated with the Gothic Revival movement in the United States in the 1880s. A common feature of the Gothic Revival style is the pointed arch, which can be seen in the windows and roof gables of the Manor. Another hallmark is the decorative bargeboard seen along the trim of the gables, with intricate, wooden designs. The interior contains a chandelier from Paris and a fireplace found in Italy.
As an award-winning wedding and special event venue, the Magnolia Manor team wished to create a welcoming and beautiful space for their guests that makes a statement every time people visit.
Kristina Carson of Magnolia Manor says she is “thrilled with the new updates to the space and how the new furniture and accents brighten up the rooms, while still looking as though they belong in the early 19th century.”

Magnolia Manor Wins Best Wedding Venue in Best of the Best Chesapeake Awards

Easton, Md. – Magnolia Manor, a historic mansion on the Tred Avon River in Easton, Md., is proud to announce its recognition as the Best Wedding Venue in the 2021 Best of the Best Chesapeake awards.

The 2021 Best of the Best Chesapeake is the official community and readers’ choice awards for the Mid-Shore. The program is organized by APG Chesapeake, the parent company of The Star Democrat.

“With this year’s ‘return to normal’ it was our honor to finally welcome couples and families for an event of a lifetime at Magnolia Manor,” said Kristina Carson, of Magnolia Manor. “We truly appreciate this recognition from the community and our clients of our efforts to provide an exception venue for families and friends to safely gather and celebrate life’s most important moments.”

Magnolia Manor was first nominated by community members in the first round in July, and then advanced to the second round of five finalists where it received the most votes in three categories in September. Winners were announced at an Oscars-style event at the Chesapeake Bay Hyatt in Cambridge earlier this month.

Something old, Something new…

The building is one of one of only a few residentially commissioned asymmetrical villa-style houses designed by Richard Upjohn, the British-born American architect associated with the Gothic Revival movement in the United States in the 1880s. Upjohn, a founding member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), also designed Trinity Church and the Church of the Ascension in New York City. Locally, he designed the Christ Church Rectory and the Trippe-Beale House in Easton and the Dorchester County Courthouse in Cambridge.

In 1649, Francis Armstrong, a Quaker fleeing religious persecution, emigrated to the British colony of Maryland where he acquired a number of land grants from the Second Baron of Baltimore, Cecil Calvert. One was a 600-acre tract known as “London Derry” that later became the home of his son, Phileman, and his wife, Mary.
The property changed hands over the next 100 years and was eventually owned by a U.S. Navy surgeon who commissioned the construction of Magnolia Manor in 1861. Construction was delayed due to the Civil War and was completed in 1865.
