Gratitude For Our Community GiveOrcas Support

When my family moved to Orcas Island in 1995, one of our earliest experiences with this community took place at the Odd Fellows Hall. Nancy Koenig and her marimba band were playing a dance at the Hall. We were delighted by the music, the dancing, and the feel of the place. I instantly fell in love with this old building, and that sense of connection to place has increased over the years as we have attended community gatherings, including community Thanksgiving meals, memorials (where we honored my mother, Monique), graduation parties, weddings, dances, including our annual Halloween dances, concerts, potlucks, classes, movies, and enjoying meals downstairs in the kitchen, and having the pleasure to take part in the meetings downstairs in the lodge as one of the Odd Fellows where we have prepared for parades, had deep inner works, created our community service opportunities, and have done the business of keeping the building a thriving place for our community.

So many of you have your stories of this beloved place that is an integral part of being in community on this island. The widespread community support we received through the OICF GiveOrcas Spring Campaign is an indication of how so many of you care about our community hall.

On behalf of the Odd Fellows Mt. Constitution Lodge #88, we wish to extend our deep gratitude to the Orcas Island Community Foundation, their staff and board, and the outgoing lead of the highly successful organization, Hilary Canty, for all their efforts to make GiveOrcas the success that it is, bringing much-needed funding to so many worthy organizations who were fully funded thanks to the generosity of not only our community but those off-island folks who contributed.

Deep gratitude to all of you who contributed to the upcoming renovation of our Odd Fellows Hall deck so that we can continue to provide a gathering place for the community and for all the events in the future that many of you will enjoy. You are appreciated and are a vital part of the sense of place we all have created on our island. Thank you!

WHEN YOU HAVE LOST SOMEONE YOU
LOVE…….
Do not make the mistake of living in sadness, or living small to honor their absence.
You owe it to them to live even more vividly than before.
If they could reach you, they would surely say..
“Take the love you had for me and turn it into gladness,
use the love you had for me to drive away the sadness.”
Love is an energy, so powerful, so all-consuming that when the person you felt all that love for is not here, you are a vessel filled with a boundless source of power that has nowhere to go.
Harness it.
Use it to burn even more brightly and live even more loudly than before.
Share the love you felt for that person with all the other special people in your life, for it is limitless. There is no end to it and there never, ever should be.
If they could reach you they would surely say…
“Make my time on earth count loudly, so I’ve not lived in vain.
Use the love we shared to make more love and not more pain.”
If you are struggling to move on, to find the way to carry on. Without them.
This is it.
Use the love.
Carry them with you in all that you do, using their love as the source.
It is what they would want.
Tell their stories, mention their name, feel their love – and share it.
Do not let the pain of their loss overshadow the love that they created whilst alive.
Make them count.
Remember, grief is the price you pay for a love divine. The stronger the love, the deeper the grief but love, love will always win in the end.

Ropeswing wedding on Orcas Island!

07/12/2021

This was such a wonderful weekend! On Saturday morning I had the pleasure to row my little rowboat to Shaw Island for a small, intimate wedding that was as sweet as can be! It was at a beautiful place on the groom's family land. Then I rowed back and had the pleasure to help coordinate and officiate a wonderful wedding at Pebble Cove Farm in Deer Harbor. I love seeing people on what could be one of their happiest days of their life! Such great beauty: scenic, flowers, food, clothing, decorations, music, all the touches that make it so sweet. I feel truly blessed to be a part of this and to be of service. On Sunday, Kathryn and I relaxed in hammocks at Mountain Lake. I had the pleasure of a four lake swim day (Twin Lakes, Mountain Lake, and Cascade Lake). These are the good old days!

Zoom weddings let your family and friends witness your wedding from the comfort of their own homes. Don't let COVID-19 stop you from getting married.

With two witnesses (or more), the couple, and myself (the officiant) we can have a virtual wedding that is heartfelt, personal, and certainly memorable! I can help you with the legal details and provide a wonderful ceremony using Zoom, FaceTime, or Skype.

I was honored to officiate a wedding with the bride and groom at Mukilteo Beach, while I was in the comfort of my home. Friends and family witnessed on Zoom from various parts of the country. The ceremony was created together and was very well appreciated by the couple and their guests. A Zoom wedding!
