June 20, 2025
Dear Hornet Families,
As many of you are aware, effective June 27, 2025, a new law, Senate Bill 181, passed during the 2025 legislative session, requires school boards to adopt a traceable communication system that “shall be the exclusive means for school district employees and volunteers to communicate electronically with students.”
Metcalfe County Schools will use Finalsite Chat and district email to communicate with students. These are secure communication platforms that meet the requirements of the new law.
Teachers, coaches, and other school personnel will no longer be permitted to use personal email, text, or social media to contact students.
Over the next few weeks, staff will be training on how to use Finalsite Chat, which will be accessed through the Metcalfe County Schools app. In the meantime, we are asking all of our Hornet families to download the Metcalfe County School District app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. We will send out more information once the chat function is activated.
Family members (parents, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, aunts, uncles, or grandparents) and legal guardians who are employees or volunteers are exempt when communicating with their own children. Not all family members fall under the exceptions. Cousins and in-laws, for instance, would be subject to the restrictions.
The bill allows a parent or guardian to submit written consent for an employee or volunteer to communicate with their student outside of the traceable system. A consent form must be completed for each employee or volunteer whom the family wishes to exempt from the requirement. These forms will be available at the front office of each school starting Monday, June 23, 2025. A parent or guardian must complete the waiver(s) in person at the school their child or children attend.
Although the law does not prohibit social media connections, school staff are not permitted to use social media to message students directly. In fact, we are encouraging staff to remove current Metcalfe County students from their personal social media accounts to avoid confusion. The district will continue to use social media to share one-way communication, information, news, and announcements.
While this change may require some adjustment, please be assured that Metcalfe County Schools is committed to a smooth and supportive transition.
Thank you,
Josh Hurt, Superintendent
Metcalfe County Schools
