Mississippi Academy of Ancient Music

Mississippi Academy of Ancient Music MAAM is devoted to the performance and appreciation of "early music." We present music from the medieval period to the early 1800s.

The Mississippi Academy of Ancient Music brings music of the past to the present with outstanding performances of the music of earlier times, bringing internationally acclaimed artists from abroad as well as from our many talented local artists. In addition to presenting a concert series during the year, many of our artists provide master classes for college and high school students. The academy

has sponsored concerts by such artists as the Tallis Scholars, Stile Antico, Musica Antiqua Köln, Paul O'Dette, the Boston Camerata, the English Concert, John Paul, Trio Sonnerie, the Vecice Baroque Orchestra, the Sixteen, and many, many more. We promote what is called "historically informed performance" practice, which presents music of the past with the instruments and in the style originally intended in its first performances. Many instruments like the violin were quite different from their baroque predecessors, even though they may look the same, and they are played differently. The ancestors of the modern piano include not only the plucked string harpsichord, but the fortepiano, quite different from the modern piano in a number of ways. It's what Beethoven and Mozart played. We invite you to join our enthusiastic audiences (according to the testimony of nearly all of our guest artists) by attending and supporting these concerts. Send us an email to [email protected] or let us have have mailing address. We'll take care of things from there! The Academy grew out of series of musical birthday parties held by Dr. Ernst Borinski of Tougaloo College, in which Dr. John Paul and other singers participated. Eventually the party moved to Edwards to accommodate the growing crowds. The Academy is named after the English ensemble, the 18th century Academy of Ancient Music, in turn named after an ensemble from Handel's time, when "ancient" meant just twenty years old. Of course we chose the name because of the delightfully Southern acronym which results. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Mississippi Arts Commission, the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson, SouthArts, the Greater Jackson Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Their support, as well as that of so many of our generous concert-goers, has been absolutely essential to our success.

The beautiful chapel at Tougaloo was just the site of the best MAAM concert these untrained ears have heard. Thanks, Accademia Bizantina, such violin virtuosity.
And it was a most appreciative audience. TWO ENCORES!

Your MAAM page administrator has moved to Miami.
It has been a pleasure to serve in this way for the last several years, but it would be better for someone in central Mississippi to take over.

The program includes Ockgehem's settings of the Ordinary of the Latin Mass interspersed with some Estonian folk hymns and compositions by the composers singing in Heinavanker. The end of the concert offers a unique glimpse into the ancient runic song tradition. Margo Kõlar's "The Songs of Olden Times“ - a cycle of songs based on runic songs - transports us into the world of our ancestors. These songs show a mixture of temporal and aeonian motifs, of animist and Christian world views. There is also one song by composer Cyrillus Kreek (1899–1962), thanks to whom the unique heritage of Estonian folk hymns has been preserved.

Saturday, November 7: Heinavanker returns with a program of medieval chants and runic songs, mixed with some contemporary music in a similar style. Their music has been mesmerizing to our audiences in the past, and promises to do so again. St. James Episcopal Church. Admission; $25

Monday, November 16: Max Emanuel Cencic, countertenor, appears with Il Pomo d'Oro orchestra in a program of 17th and 18th century Venetian opera. Woodworth Chapel, Tougaloo College. Admission $30.
