Brain scans of people practicing gratitude show increases in activity and plasticity to the medial prefrontal cortex, an area essential to memory and learning. Further research has shown improvement in both deep and REM sleep in patients who actively practice gratitude. The changes are long lived as increased brain activity from gratitude can still show effects months later.
