Song of India is one of my favorite plants to use when making lei. It’s the extra touch to make a lei or arrangement to pop.
The grow well in tropical places like Hawai’i year round, not so much in Northern California. During the summer months, my Song of India plants love it outside and during the winter, I bring them indoors. Luckily if I need to grab more plants, during the winter months, a visit to the green nursery is always fun!
Needless to say, with the triple digits and heat wave of the greater Sacramento area, they are loving it outside!

Let’s talk about lei culture and etiquette…
Part of my job as a lei maker and a floral designer/florist is to educate.
Because I’m from Hawai’i and a lei maker, it’s so important to talk the meaning of a lei.
Here’s a few things to think about when you’re giving a lei.
1. Lei resembles aloha and love.
2. Lei is not gender or color specific.
3. Lei recipients aren’t suppose to refuse a lei unless you’re allergic or pregnant (pregnant ladies should only wear an open-face lei…I’ll chat about this later).
In all, remember lei is a symbol of aloha and love. The intention and mana of the lei means so much more than the actual aesthetic of the lei.

LET ME BE VERY CLEAR about competition when it comes to lei making and floral designs. Competition happens at the bottom and collaboration happens at the top. Everyone eats in my opinion.
The floral industry and especially lei making is about ALOHA AND community and I will always refer other lei makers and floral designers if I’m unavailable or don’t have experience to create something. Most of the lei makers, floral designer, and florists I know ALWAYS need help!
At the end of the day, my vibe will attract the right people and support me. Everyone has to eat, so I applaud those hustling on the street. PLUS I’M NO HATER AND WILL NEVER BE. Go get it and I’m grateful for those that support me! ❤️🤙🏽
