CONGRATULATIONS Linda and Amber on such an amazing accomplishment !

On August 24, 2024 around 12:37 PM PDT the stars aligned at Starr Vaughn Equestrian’s Regional Adult Amateur Championship dressage show to enable Linda Stanfel and her 28 year old TB mare to ride into the Dressage Foundation Century Club.

The Dressage Foundation Century Club recognizes dressage riders and horses whose combined ages total 100 years or more. Linda had just celebrated her 73rd birthday on August 23, 2024. Amberlee is 28 years old so our combined total is 101! Horse and rider perform a test of any level at a show or event, and are scored by a dressage judge or professional. We were fortunate to have the legendary Ms. Hilda Gurney as our judge. It is important to demonstrate that the rider and horse work well together.
10 years ago, I heard about the Century Club and I was thrilled to know such a program could encourage and inspire older riders to keep their older horses going with pride and perseverance. I was determined to make that milestone and am so thrilled to share this achievement with all of you that have played a special role in my equestrian journey over the years. I am especially grateful to Michele and Genay Vaughn for sharing their beautiful facility and talents with Amber and me for over 10 years. Amber and I would not be celebrating this achievement without their unwavering encouragement and support in this journey.
I must extend a special thanks to my dearest husband Paul who married me over 46 years ago despite a warning about the horse addiction from my father Andrew Sudia. Daddy took me for my first horseback ride at age 5 at Selby Stables. Who knew that would be the future location of Paul’s and my first home together at Selby Ranch Apartments.
Paul encouraged and supported my passion and in 1980 we built our small horse ranch on 5 acres in Cameron Park where in 1996- 28 years ago -Amberlee was born. I had hopes for a bay hunter/jumper gelding. This red headed filly was a handful from day one. Amberlee is the product of Tessie -a pure-bred but unregistered thoroughbred mare- and Page 9 a registered and ISR approved TB stallion who was both a successful race horse and successful high preliminary jumper. I want to be clear- Amberlee was Paul’s idea not mine and he claims to this day to be the only father she has ever known.
Our relationship has evolved on a very crooked path- to say the least. She flunked out of more training programs than I can count. But she did win a few prizes along the way in 3 day Event competition and jumping but always with a professional trainer or young talented rider onboard and always on her terms. For years she fought me at every opportunity. Our relationship took decades to build. Amber loved to jump – on her terms which can be somewhat frightening if you like control. In the 3 Day Event competition she would be almost last in dressage and still finish in the top 3 because she excelled in jumping. At some point I sent her to dressage training where she found her comfort. Amber lead me to dressage.
Amber and I have more than a few things in common that contribute to this uphill challenge. We both have spinal issues and we are both cancer survivors to name a few excuses. My work demanded much travel so Amber was boarded, ridden and trained by others, and ridden occasionally by me which also delayed our becoming agreeable partners.
Through dressage training and the patient and perseverant coaching and encouragement of Michele and Genay Vaughn we finally became a partnership. Michele and Genay can tell you that there were many moments and many years that I thought I would never do more than walk and trot but now I sincerely look forward to the pleasure of riding Amber and she looks forward to seeing me and the associated treats she receives for her cooperation. I can honestly say that we work well together—most days. Amberlee keeps me humble.
I am proud that Amber and I are still alive and still physically capable to perform a dressage test- albeit a rather elementary test. Our relationship has survived the test of time and we have finally learned to work together. This is a huge achievement for us and we do not plan to stop progressing.
I sincerely thank everyone who encouraged both of us along this crooked and challenging path to get to the milestone of our Century Club ride. Thank you all for joining us to celebrate perseverance and mutual support. I only hope that many other equestrians will take up this challenge and continue to ride proudly into the Century Club registry.
Cheers Amber! We made it!
- Linda Stanfel
