A belated Happy Birthday to the Elk Rapids Town Hall, which yesterday celebrated the culmination of its 142nd year serving the people of our Village and surrounding area.

The inaugural event at the Hall was a Grand Opening Ball and Supper held on Feb. 22, 1883. Here's how one contemporaneous observer described the event:

"The Ball and Supper given in the Hall last evening was a success musically, financially and in every way the managers expected to have it. The hall, as before mentioned, is a beautiful one...The music was the best we ever heard in this northern country. All the evening a large number were in the gallery listening to the music and watching the dancing. The supper, which was excellent, was served at 12 O'clock to over 150 persons in the basement of the hall. The total number of dance and supper tickets sold numbered 83, also 73 gallery, and nine supper tickets, making the total receipts $188.75. People participated from the surrounding country and towns: Mancelona, Torch Lake, and Traverse City. All who were present voted in saying it was the best public hall they ever attended. All the visitors were struck with the beauty and convenience of the hall."

I guess some things never change! Here's to the next 142 years for the grande dame of Elk Rapids.

All aboard the HERTHA time machine! Today we travel back in time to Feb. 23, 1883, to hear a firsthand description of the brand new building on River St., from the Elk Rapids Progress newspaper. The writer had the previous night attended the grand opening ball and came away impressed:

"The hall, as before mentioned, is a beautiful one, and is much enhanced in beauty internally by the arch over the stage, recently in the hands of the decorators. The music was the best we have ever heard in this northern country. All the evening a large number were in the gallery listening to the music and watching the dancing."

Many things have changed since that opening night nearly 142 years ago, but stepping into the Hall today is like stepping back in time - it's not hard to imagine the early residents of our Village feasting, laughing, and dancing in their new community center. And judging from all the parties, concerts, meetings, and plays held at the Hall in 2024, we are proudly keeping that tradition alive.

Great turnout this morning for our neighbors up the street at the Elk Rapids Cinema, who hosted a free showing of "The Snowman," a lovely animated short released in 1982. A perfect choice for a snowy morning! Along with the film they served up free yummy treats and hot cocoa. Thanks Maryanne, Kali, Ellie, and all the great folks who keep the popcorn popping and movies lighting up the screen.

Did you know that just like the Cinema, the Town Hall is run by a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit? We are just a couple of the many non-profits who diligently work to enrich the community in Elk Rapids, and we rely on the support of patrons and volunteers...like you! If you would like more information about volunteering with the Historic Elk Rapids Town Hall Association, let me know by sending an email to [email protected].

Now doesn't that look cozy? The Rotarians are busy getting the Hall ready for their annual Christmas party and charity auction Tuesday evening. This year, proceeds raised from the auction will benefit the great work being done by Acme Christian Thrift Store and Food Pantry, Good Samaritan of Ellsworth, and the Community Cupboard Food Pantry of Elk Rapids. Thanks, Elk Rapids Rotary Club for supporting those in need!

Members of the public are welcome to stop by around 6:30 for the auction itself - there are sure to be some fantastic items up for bid.
