Hi everyone!

One of the things I’ve been working on behind the scenes is being the lead farmer for a brand new Watershed Protection Group in Walworth County!

Walworth Alliance Teaching Environmental Regenerative Systems (WATERS) is a producer-led watershed group dedicated to protecting and restoring the water resources that sustain our farms, communities, and ecosystems in Walworth County.

We will have 3 pasture walks this year, free and open to the public, where we get the chance to walk through these farms first hand and hear from the farmers about their operations! It’s a great experience to see what goes on at working farms and how it affects our communities.

We have some big goals this year for our farm! One being working on our pastures. 🐮

If you’ve ever picked up flowers from the farm, you probably noticed our sketchy fencing that keeps 1000+ pound animals from running free. 😬 We are hoping to not only fix up these fences but create new paddocks to rotationally graze cattle. The first step is cleaning up our treeline so we can run new fencing through it.

What is rotational grazing? It is a conservation practice where you create small paddocks within your pastures and only keep your cattle in them for one day and move them onto the next. This way they’re on new grass every day, spreading their fertilizer and making sure the grasses aren’t being eaten down too much and the soil is stable.

I’m not sure we will get new fencing up this year with the limited time we have but you have to start somewhere!

Well, this was a surprise. 😲

If you missed my stories last week, we have chicks again! Now let me tell you how this happened. 😆

I went to check on my Seramas last Wednesday who live in the black coop/shed in our backyard, also in my garden. I noticed 2 hens sitting in the same nest box for the past week on and off, not super consistent. That day the silkie one, Tabitha, was squawking like crazy at me! I decided I’d better collect the eggs under her before she thinks she needs to be a mom. So I picked her up and went to grab the eggs and I heard a chick PEEPING at me! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I look at the eggs and there’s SIX that all have pip holes!!!! Obviously I couldn’t take those eggs away now…so the very next morning I woke up to all 6 healthy, happy babies.

🌟 Side note, I did not intend on getting more Seramas, I was actually planning on letting the 5 I had remaining live out their lives and then be done with seramas. And now I’ve more than doubled. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I split up the 6 chicks so both of my hens who wanted to be moms, get to be moms. 🤷🏻‍♀️ My experienced mama hen “Blue Girl” has all 4 of the ginger chicks and my means hen “Tabitha” has 2 darker, brown/black chicks.

Have you heard of Serama chickens before? (I know some of my Serama friends are out there!) If you haven’t, here’s some quick highlights. Seramas are the smallest breed of chicken, they lay tiny eggs and they aren’t cold hardy. I could go on but I’ll save that for another day.

Happy Monday! ✨

This week I’ll be sharing some updates on what we have been working on at the farm! I feel like there’s so much going on yet on social media, it looks like nothing. 😆

I’ll start with my weekend and work backwards! I was asked by a friend to *quickly* put together Adult Prom flowers! Specifically, a posey bouquet and boutonnière. This is my first time creating a bout and I like it! I am still waiting on feedback regarding how it held up during the party 🕺

Is this something you’d like to see us offer for prom and homecoming? Since I would be ordering flowers and not using my own, I would need a lot of interest in order to commit to offering them.

It’s a great weekend to take a trip to Terra Barn Collective! The entire store is freshened up for a beautiful spring weekend of shopping.

Did you know I also non toxic deodorant at my booth? Not only are there dried flowers and tallow products but I also have aluminum and baking soda free deodorant! Give it a try!

Seed starting is in full swing over here! My shelves are filling up fast and believe it or not, this is not even close to half of the trays I need to seed! 👀

Some prefer to direct seed (put their seeds into the ground outside) but I start every seed inside and then transplant my seedlings outside at the appropriate time. I do this for a few reasons:

Since germination rates vary and I want every hole in my w**d barrier to have a plant, I make a certain amount of trays to ensure this happens.

I have more control over the weather inside. Mother Nature isn’t always helpful 😬

I have blooms a few weeks to a month sooner by starting them inside.

I can’t trust myself to consistently water 🤣
