The first time October was designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month was in 1987, thirty-seven years ago. And since that time, I must admit, a lot has been done to spread awareness of the victims of domestic violence. However, the number of victims has remained similar, if not worse in some years. Victims are still murdered every year. Restraining orders are still applied for and broken every year. Family court cases still drag on when abusers turn their power and control onto the children. And despite the hundreds of laws put in effect to assist victims with their safety and eventual freedom from abuse, not much has changed.

Worldwide, legislatures have enacted laws clarifying that coercive control is domestic violence. In the U.S., laws on coercive control are in civil not criminal codes, (with the exception of Hawaii, where coercive control is considered a petty misdemeanor). These coercive control laws primarily affect protective orders, divorce and child custody. These laws lead to criminal charges only when an abuser defies a protective order.

As we end the month of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month does not mean we stop bringing awareness to the this deadly epidemic. We must continue to break the silence. I want to take this opportunity again to thank everyone who came out to our DV Awarness Month Brunch /fundraiser. I appreciate your prayers, love , encouragement and support . To every participant who comes to our monthly support group keep coming, you are not alone and as you continue to heal emotionally things WILL get better. To Aramide Adedeji thank yoi you you for sharing your story with us. Can’t wait to receive and read your new book.
