To round out Theatre History II's research on Clyde Fitch, here is a scene from his play "The Girl With The Green Eyes."
Clyde Fitch was a gay man and was frequently bullied in school and harassed by critics. He also allegedly had an affair with playwright Oscar Wilde, who influenced his early plays. Fitch was especially known for his ability to create well-written women roles that women of the time identified with.
Fitch’s Sapho (1899) followed the love affairs of the lead woman with unmarried men. This play featured a scene in which two women went offstage ‘consummate their love’, which led the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice and the New York Mother’s Club, to sue the show organizers for indecency, interrupting the production for more than a month. Fitch immediately fled the country to France following this.
Clyde Fitch was born in Elmira, NY on May 2, 1865. His full name was William Clyde Fitch. He graduated from Amherst College in 1886. Clyde Fitch is known as the first American playwright to be published. In his 19 years of writing plays, he wrote over 60 different types of plays. Clyde Fitch is known as the most successful playwright of the late-19th and early-20th century and he holds the record for having four plays running concurrently on Broadway. His plays sparked a lot of controversy. Many people did not agree with his viewpoints during the late 1800s. Clyde Fitch was one of the first directors to allow an actor to say “goddamn” onstage at a Broadway performance. He was also known for having two of his actresses arrested during a play due for having one of the woman in the play whisked another woman offstage to (assumably) have sex, which was never heard of during this time. Clyde Fitch was allegedly dating Oscar Wilde while his agent was a lesbain named Elizabeth Marbury. He died from blood poisoning on Sept. 4, 1909 after not getting treatment for his appendicitis attacks. He originally was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, New York but in 1910 his body was removed and cremated. His ashes were placed in a sarcophagus and put into the family mausoleum in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
