On Sunday, Jewish organizations in San Diego gathered with hundreds of Jewish locals for a conversation and reception to reveal the results of the San Diego Jewish Community Study. Together, we got an exciting snapshot of Jewish life in San Diego as we learned about the unique fabric of our Jewish community. The community heard the results of the demographics, engagement, and needs assessment, and gave feedback that will inform actionable steps for the future of our region. This Study and the event are catalyzing even greater collaboration to meet the needs of the San Diego Jewish community.

Last night we had the honor of hosting the executive team from The Forward, a nonprofit independent Jewish-American news organization that has been in operation for over 100 years. In a conversation with Lawrence Family JCC CEO Betzy Lynch, The Forward’s editor-in-chief Jodi Rudoren enlightened us on her perspective of the war in Israel as a veteran journalist whose experience includes a 20-year span as Jerusalem Bureau chief for the The New York Times. Together, Jodi, Betzy, and our wonderful guests discussed the importance of diverse perspectives in fostering a pluralistic society that values listening, understanding, and critical thinking in building meaningful solutions.

WEDNESDAY! Join Impact Cubed, Jewish Federation of San Diego, Lawrence Family JCC, and Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego on Wednesday, November 15th for an armchair conversation with Jodi Rudoren, editor-in-chief of the iconic Forward and former Jerusalem Bureau chief for the New York Times. We will discuss fostering public trust through informed reporting about the war in Israel and how you can make a meaningful difference in helping those whose lives have been torn apart and in influencing how media reports the story.

Betzy Lynch, CEO of Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center JACOBS FAMILY CAMPUS will interview Jodi followed by updates and discussion of why supporting quality, independent media is so important, the role of Jewish journalism during this difficult time and updates from the ground in Israel about emerging needs and how they are being addressed by the Jewish Federation Sha’ar HaNegev Emergency Fund and the Impact Cubed Grassroots Israel Emergency Initiative.
As we witness the consequences of the range of media’s representation of the war, this is a unique opportunity to understand the way media engages for the sake of common good.

One month ago, hundreds of hostages including babies, young children, elders, and those who are sick and injured were brutally taken by Hamas terrorists from their homes in Israel and kidnapped into the Gaza Strip. Each and every of these individuals has a story. As we mark their 31st day in captivity, we will gather as a community for an evening of sharing their stories and members of our San Diego clergy teaching about the important commandment of redeeming the captive. Let’s stand together to bring them home now.

10/12/2023

It was powerful and impactful to stand with over 4,500 community members who joined us last night for an incredibly emotional vigil in solidarity with Israel and remembrance of those who have fallen – our family, friends, and community. Let us continue to pray for peace and solace for all who are suffering.

We know many of our neighbors and allies are looking for ways to lend additional support. Here are some ways you can take action:

1. Reach out to loved ones, friends and colleagues who are in Israel to understand their experiences. Check in on each other – we all need support at this time.

2. Arm yourself with real information directly from the ground. Get news from Israeli news sites. Reach out to loved ones in Israel to understand their experiences. Jewish Federation is also providing updates on their website, jewishinsandiego.org.

3. Become an ambassador to share these stories. Be the voices of those whose lives have been torn apart through the murder of their loved ones, those who are now being held by terrorist kidnappers for the “crime” of being Jewish, those facing critical injury, and for every single Israeli. The truth must be heard.

4. Share the efforts of Israelis across sectors who are stepping up in such beautiful ways even amidst the grief, pain, and worry to volunteer in every possible way. The scope of volunteer efforts to emerge in the last few days is staggering. People are giving blood, making food, putting together care packages, checking on elderly neighbors, and more – Israelis caring for Israelis.

5. Give generously to the Federation Israel Emergency Fund, which will directly support Sha’ar HaNegev, and ask others to do the same. Funds will be used to directly assist victims and their families, provide critical trauma response and respite, share emergency supplies, and more. We must step up to provide resources for our devastated friends in the region.

TOMORROW!

Legacy giving refers to donations that supporters plan to give to your nonprofit after their passing. Legacy giving is also commonly referred to as planned giving as donors often plan these gifts years before they are distributed. During National Will Month, join us for this workshop to explore ways to imbue a legacy giving plan into your organization’s overall fundraising efforts. We’ll discuss the right time to launch such a program and ways to embrace the effort throughout the organization. You will leave with an easy, seven-step process to begin and maintain a legacy planning initiative.

Have you attended one of Coastal Roots Farm’s Sukkot Harvest Festivals? This year, instead of Sukkot, our friends at the Farm are hosting their first-ever Tishrei Ag Fest on Sunday, September 10th from 10am-2pm!

Tishrei is the first month of the Jewish year and is referred to as the “month of beginning.” Just as the period from Thanksgiving to New Years is referred to as “the holiday season” in the Gregorian calendar, Tishrei encompasses the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah, and is referred to as “the chaggim (holidays).

This year, each of the Sundays proximate to Sukkot are also chaggim (observed holy days). In order to uplift the spirit of those observed days and to be inclusive of community members with a range of observances, the Farm is hosting an expanded Tishrei Ag Fest which will have a similar festive feel (and will also feature a traditional sukkah structure!)

Register today to participate in holiday activities, food workshops, panel discussion, yoga, meditation, kids crafts, and more! 🐝

The Hive Story

The Hive at Leichtag Commons is a center for Creativity, Collaboration & Connection. It is your home for co-working, professional development and Jewish culture here in Encinitas! We provide event, meeting and work space with stunning natural surroundings and an adjacent organic Jewish community farm.

Our goal is to build a more connected community for nonprofits and to provide creative & collaborative Jewish experiences for all to enjoy. With our co-working space, we aim to create more connection and foster deeper meaning in the work-life balance.

In our events space, we strive to foster unique opportunities for organizations and entrepreneurs to learn, evolve, collaborate and socialize, whether it's in an intimate workshop in our East side Space or an outdoor mixer on our Farm House lawn!

The Hive is an initiative of the Leichtag Foundation, fulfilling its strategy to ignite vibrant Jewish life in North County San Diego.
