Indee Jones was primarily born and raised in Alabama but graduated high school in New Jersey. Creating things from scratch is the foundation upon which she has built her life. Her lifelong passion for making led her to pursue studies at The Fashion Institute of Technology, in New York City, where she studied Textile Development and Marketing Trade. This was all before realizing she had the truest passion for cooking. She has always been compelled to make things from raw forms. In her career, she develops and manages fabric from its raw form, which is similar to cooking, in a way that raw materials (fibers) are actually the ingredients to create fabrications.
Many of her inspirations can be traced back to her upbringing in Alabama, where she was surrounded by very strong women. Instead of playing outside and watching television, Indee enjoyed watching her grandmothers cook. At about eight years old, she was intrigued by these women who loved cooking for their families. Indee often says, “There is a true difference in taste by someone who cooks with love and someone who does not.”
Bougie Soul Food is a concept that she came up with after becoming frustrated with the poor health in our communities, frustrated that so many African Americans have no claim over their own heritage and no access to fields of heirlooms that their very own ancestors brought to this country. She believes that the children of our communities should have the opportunity to eat traditional foods that are safe to eat. She makes everything from scratch and refrains from even using harmful cooking oils. Cooking from scratch allows her to infuse local and natural ingredients with key southern staples.
