Kindness gets your needs met most of the time. Even if you are angry, in order to approach your partner effectively you must be kind. If you’ve paved the way for your partner to be open to you, they are more likely to hear your frustration and respond with compassion.

Being kind and gentle is a decision. Just as we offer a smile and hold the door open for a stranger, we must remember to cultivate this habit in our relationship, no matter how many months or years have passed.

In all of my work (coaching, officiating, and energy healing) I've learned that people generally are terrible mind-readers.

Here's a danger sign: You'd think he'd/she'd know... (insert an unspoken want or need here).

When we are hoping for our partner to do/not do/know/remember, etc something and we don't vocalize it, we are setting ourselves up for disappointment and our partner up for failure.

Speak up. Say what you want/need. Don't make your partner play a guessing game because you will both lose.

Finding a way to communicate healthily during conflict is vital to a lasting marriage.

Refrain from put-downs and name-calling. Take a break from the disagreement if you amp up into shouting or feeling out of control. Pick a time when you will both be calmer and able to discuss the disagreement instead of shouting about it.

Couples will have conflict.
How you choose to deal with it is what is important.

Great marriages don't just happen. We need to continue building connection after the excitement of the wedding and honeymoon has worn off.

Take the time to express appreciation for the little things: a back rub, a cup of coffee made and delivered, doing the dishes, cleaning the cat boxes.

Welcome to Monday's Make Your Marriage Better Tip:

Never use the "d" word...divorce. It adds poison to the marriage.

If you feel you are at that point, then discuss it, but never throw it out in
a fit of rage or anger.

Instead, practice saying what you're feeling instead.
For instance, "I'm feeling really hopeless right now." Or "I'm feeling really disconnected from you."

Using divorce as a threat is not a strategy for solving problems.
