Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. It started after the Civil War in the late 1860s. People would decorate the gravesites of fallen soldiers and recite prayers.

On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, declared that “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,”

What started as a somber observance to remember the fallen soldiers from the Civil War, we now honor those American military personnel who died in all wars.

The staff of 32 West Eighth join with the rest of the Nation to honor the memory of all the fallen military whose sacrifice allows us to live free.
