I don't often do anniversary parties, but today I’m working a 50th anniversary, and you might think, "50th—that's going to be pretty laid back." In most cases, that could be true, but not today! This couple is treating it like a full wedding celebration. They're renewing their vows, heading out for photos, while their guests enjoy a cocktail hour. Once they return, we’re diving into full introductions, complete with the wedding party. There’s a first dance, toasts, parental spotlight dances, the shoe game, a video during dinner, cake cutting, and five spotlight dances! Everyone should treat anniversaries with this kind of energy!

What a whirlwind of a weekend! I was honored to not only DJ and Emcee Bastian and Nikitha's western style wedding Sunday evening but their Sangeeth (google it, pretty fun) on Saturday and their Hindu Wedding ceremony on Sunday morning. Lots and lots of moving parts! What and incredible party and couple. Special call out to Shawn Steele. The area had a power outage and Shawn was gracious enough to run me batteries so we had powered sound until it came back on 2 hours later. I need some coffee, stat!

Why does a floor plan matter to a DJ? 🤔

This is one of the most common discussions and pain points among DJs.

There is a lot to consider here, but ultimately, there is a common consensus that DJs belong near dance floors. It seems logical, but ironically, more often than not, we are shuffled off to a corner or some awkward position so the cake can occupy a prime spot, or we are sometimes in a completely separate location from where the party is because we were never considered in the floor plan.

Yes, we have technology that allows us to put sound almost anywhere. However, we shouldn’t have to make ridiculous layouts work. Event professionals and venues should care about great outcomes for the couple and all their vendors. Layouts are a big part of it.

At the end of the day, we do what we have to do. No contract requirement or agreement provision is going to a fix layout problem. The truth is, we’ve got to make it work because that’s what we are paid to do.

That said…

There is a difference between seeing the dance floor and “feeling” like you’re part of the dance floor. This is why DJs push for a central location so hard.

The little things shouted by the crowd, cheers, smiles, body language, pointing, fist bumps, thumbs up, dance circles, or other unique moments happening on the dance floor may not be seen or felt by us because we aren’t where we should be—near the action.

This can impact the song choices we make, how we MC, how we engage with your crowd, or even what spotlight moments can or can’t happen. Being present is a big part of what we do because we rely on energy.That’s why we care about layouts. It leads to better outcomes. It’s not about being the center of attention; it’s about making sure you and your guests are at the center of ours.
