Mother’s Day is around the corner and if you’ve wanted to try a Documentary Session but want to try a shorter session first - this is the perfect time!
Mother’s Day Petite Sessions is a great chance to have a 30 minute session with just mom and kids for some sweet candids doing any activity that you love to do together.
We can meet at the kids’ fav park, pick strawberries. I can come to your home and you can bake cookies or play games. If your kids love to play dress up (like mine did :)), you can have a dress up time. There are so many possibilities.
These are the perfectly ordinary days you will want to remember.

I did a family documentary session for a sweet family in portland a couple weeks ago and had so much fun with their boys vibrant personalities and endless energy. 🙂
As I cull these photos and see these personal moments, I can’t help but remind you that Mother’s Day is approaching and your mom or wife wants photos. 😉
It’s the one thing she can’t or won’t buy herself OR doesn’t want to drag her family to a session. So I have the perfect solution! On this 43rd birthday of mine I’m thinking about a lyric in a song by David Ramirez that says “the biggest lie I’ve ever been told is wisdom comes with age,”
And this couldn’t be truer. We expect ppl to grow as they age and experience life, but this isn’t the key to growing through what life throws at us. I believe the key is to be open to growth, humble in our own views, and surround ourselves with ppl who think differently than us whom we also want to learn from.
And because this is how I see to acquire wisdom, I resent when others say “oh you will know or understand when you are such and such age.”
I think this is unhelpful especially when we raise our kids and wish for them to learn things quicker than we did. And it keeps us from learning from ppl younger than us. To have this posture of “when you’re older…” I have some pretty wise friends who are more than a decade younger than me.
When I’m talking out a person’s behavior and choices with my kids, I’m always interjecting how the ppl are responding whether good or bad so they can learn and not have to wait till they are at whatever age to obtain some wisdom.
So no. I don’t believe wisdom solely comes with age. There is much more to this and maybe we can equip the younger generation to understand life sooner than we did by also giving tools to see life.

Yesterday we gathered with friends to celebrate the 3rd Sunday of Advent with a meal of butternut squash soup, crispy sage leaves, and red fife sourdough bread. Our friends played Christmas songs in our living room while the rest of us visited, shared our faith stories, complex cultural issues and how we can love better, and listened to the littles chime in with their tiny voices singing Christmas songs.
Advent.
He has arrived and is arriving.
This was our story yesterday. Basking in the fullness of community while grieving the here and not yet of the hurts in the world that have yet to be healed.
Living is complex. Hard. Beautiful. Sorrowful.
Living this life with others who also wrestle, brings a peace to our souls.

My busy season is slowing down with my last day of sessions this Saturday and I find myself looking forward to all of the books I haven’t been able to read these last few months because of work and home school.
I give part of my daily schedule to reading and I miss it!
And my Christmas list is 99% church history books. 😬So I’m hoping I can add to my over flowing stack I have going now. 😉
This is what’s on my list to finish or read beginning in these coming weeks. 👏
⭐️ I’m over half way through Brothers Karamazov. Gracelyn and I will tackle Crime and a Punishment this spring, so this is one to finish first!
⭐️ Chaim Potok’s In the Beginning. I’m half way through it.
⭐️ Anam Cara by John O’ Donohue. I’ve wanted to read this for quite awhile.
⭐️The Bible In the Early Church and Worship in the Early Church. Both are by Justo Gonzales. He makes church history for popular level folks like me 😉
⭐️ Open Mind Open Heart by Thomas Keating. He was my Grandpa’s Cousin on my Dad’s side and the family talked about his life as a monk but being a Protestant kid, I just didn’t think much of it until these last many years I had wished I met him. 💛 He def writes like a Keating as in it isn’t as accessible for someone like me and I have to read it slowly. 🤷🏻‍♀️
⭐️ I read Caste by Isabel Wilkerson and it was 🤯, so I want to read her other book The Great Migration.
⭐️ Isabella (my 18 year old) has just discovered Middle March by Elliot and I want to reread it again so we can discuss it.
I have so many other books going for the kids’ school and two other book clubs. So this list just touches on my attempts at what I’m reading.
Also subject to change once Christmas gets here and I get *all* my books. 😉

People have told me that they love the documentary style but the idea of being 100% unposed seems different/overwhelming/possibly awkward and asked if I would incorporate some of my gently directed lifestyle approach in to part of their session.
The answer is YES! And I understand. If I didn’t have our own documentary session before I jumped in to this approach, I would feel the same. Even though I hate being posed and I want real raw moments.
So if you love this style of photography and want your story told but also want some gentle direction for posing for part of your session, I can do that!
I realize these sessions are different than the mainstream and not many photographers do 100% unposed sessions. But I promise you. If you feel anything when you see these real moments, then it’s worth giving it a try. The only photos I have hung on our walls are unposed. 💛

It took me many years to settle on the photos of our family that I wanted on our wall. I wanted to feel something when I walked by them several times a day. I wanted to be taken back to that day. Remember what my kids voices sounded like.
I searched through so many images on my hard drives until I settled on about 10. I don’t have one photo from a traditional family session.
But I do have one with terrible lighting of Gracelyn when she was 2 and I had called her name and she looked up at me with the most delighted expression.
There is one with awful color saturation of isabella but on a summer day playing in the pool. I remember how excited she was to jump in and out of our tiny backyard pool.
One Halloween the girls were dressed in over the top red princess dresses and I asked them to hug. Gracelyn turned her little face towards Isabella and closed her eyes.
Then there are several from our own Documentary session shot by when we explored Finley Wildlife Refuge together. Some are posed but they feel so natural because we were relaxed from just exploring and meandering through the trails and ponds.
This is what I want to give my clients. A moment to remember and feel when parents walk by the photos carrying laundry, a sick child, reading a book on the couch together.
I want to give people more than a beautiful image with perfect lighting and smiles. It’s the memories of that day together and the season of life that you will want to remember.
Take this from a mom of an almost 19 and 17 year old and a son who just entered the quick years (high school).

I did something I’ve never done before this weekend and hosted a Santa Mini Session event! I didn’t realize how much fun I would have seeing the kids see Santa! Some were shy and barely looked at him and others got right up and told him what they wanted for Christmas.
As a documentary photography I loved getting the natural smiles and the way they looked at Santa’s face. 💛💛
I photographed their hands with Santa’s hands, shy smiles, excited expressions. I cannot wait to do these again next year! 💛💛

My lifestyle sessions are 1 hour and done at an outdoor location with gentle prompts from me to get some natural interactions and expressions as a family.

I can’t remember a time even from a young age when I wasn’t asking myself “is there more to my faith tradition than this?”
I grew up in the church and always had questions and had a deep desire for more. Now, I love Jesus with my entire being. Nothing moves me as much as thinking of my deep love for Jesus. But when it came the to expressions of my faith, what was provided to me in my American evangelical traditions, was always wanting and I couldn’t figure out why.
I began looking in to this slowly around 2016. Yes, election year. I saw how the church was responding to political issues with a lack of love and grace. Then 2020, and I was even more lost. I didn’t see expressions of Jesus’ love like I thought should be. So I started reading. I read about contemplative practices, I found voices who were doing their best now to show love despite disagreements. I read church history beginning 2,000 years ago. I questioned my won political views.
Paul and I had a Italy trip planned for May 2020 and our emphasis was art history but as the trip got delayed and we began to learn how deep our faith truly goes, our focus changed.
We spent 3 weeks in the richest history I’ve ever been. A history that is mine. People who came before me who are my history. People who have lost like I have, grieved. Rejoiced as I have.
I found myself in a small room in Santa Croce meditating on the aged frescos, realizing I am a part of this story with the artist who also poured his heart in to these paintings. My story is etched here too.
I read about traditions that I may not theologically prescribe to, but I know their hearts were fully and completely wrapped in the knowledge of who Jesus was and had their own revelation and expression.

The cpl months after our trip last year I realize now that I was in a debrief of sorts. Like after an outreach. My mind was trying to make sense of what I experienced with where I am placed. And how can I practice and walk with these revelations here.
My desire is not to throw out what I’ve grown up in. I’ve actually been able to engage deeper in my faith now, knowing there is more and I have a richer history than I’ve ever known. 💛

I spent a lovely afternoon with the Baker family, taking stills and a film as they snuggled and loved on their newborn baby boy, played with their chickens, painted, and braided hair. It was such a sweet peaceful time, and the Baker family is 💛 Here is their film.

A few weeks ago Paul and I documented a trip for Jonathon Malone of Wilderness Journeys. We spent two nights at the lovely Erma Bell Lakes. Jonathon incorporates contemplative practices in his outdoor adventures, while making delicious food and facilitating wonderful conversations. Here is a poem he read by Mary Oliver

Our Story

My husband, Paul and I are high school sweet hearts and have been happily married for 19 years. We live in the beautiful northwest, nestled in the Willamette Valley of Oregon where we raise our our three kids, Isabella, Gracelyn, and Lincoln and have two identical twin boys, Joshua and Kaleb in heaven.

My journey began in portrait photography after losing our twin boys and became a way for me to heal by finding the beauty in every day life. Grief has a way of clouding over the evidence of the every day blessings and by seeking to record these moments it brought joy to my heart.

Now despite this journey being birthed from loss, we have a thriving business that gives us the opportunity to document the most precious of moments for our clients and in so doing, we have come to know some of the sweetest of families, some whom we are fortunate to call our dear friends.

This is a beautiful life we live.
