August 3, 2024 (6-9pm)

Location: Canvas + Clay (233 F Street)

“ABSTRACT WORLDS,” Ken Waldvogel, acrylic painting and sculpture.

“ABSTRACT WORLDS” is a group art exhibition featuring a variety of abstract styles. Ken Waldvogel has created a collection of bright bold geometric paintings that are a tantalizing treat for the eyes. The other artists from The Studio will exhibit abstract expressionistic paintings, abstract representational works and ceramic sculpture glazed with abstract design.
An Abstract piece of art is your world to create. You get to decide the colors, the design, the texture, anything goes. You can choose to be in control of the lines and the amount of details or you can choose to let go and let your brush or pen release the emotions within. “ABSTRACT WORLDS” celebrates art with less rules and more freedom of expression.

KEN WALDVOGEL :
I’m a 35 year old man who lives in Humboldt, and has lived in Humboldt all his life. I’m a very energetic person, my side hustle is DJing a dance every few months. I like to go to the beach, I like to go to movies, I like to hang out and play video games with my friends. I was an actor in a play too, that was super fun. My very first play, I had a blast but it will not be my last. I now have stepped out of my comfort zone and so I’m pretty proud of myself for that one.
I’ve been making art since Middle School in 1999. Back then it was simple, now it’s geometric. My favorite part about making art is choosing the colors. I love that there are so many colors out there to choose from. It’s not just simple reds, blues, greens anymore. It’s a variety of colors. My favorite part about color choosing is I can go to Michael’s and there’s just a whole row of colors.
With my geometric shapes I have three methods: freestyle, checkerboard, and ruler. I can go freestyle, where I’m letting my hand just move and make these crazy shapes. Or, I go checkerboard. Because checkerboard to me is very easy to do, and it’s easier to break down the shape when I’m doing a checkerboard. Or, a ruler and measuring all the shapes and sizes.
When I do my art, I feel joy because I love to see what my finished project is going to be, and every time I’m done with one they’ve always been beautiful, very bright. I’ve never really done one based off my emotions but every time I do one it’s a lot of joy. I like listening to pop music like Britney Spears and N’Sync. I think when I put my headphones on and I’m listening to my music, it’s a way my brain reacts to the art piece and the music, that I’m just joyful, very relaxed, very calm and it keeps my focus. When I’m in my world, then I’m really good.
I want people to feel the joy I put into it but I also want them to see the details and the time it took me to build these pieces because yes they look easy but they’re not. It’s a lot of painting, and I’m not the fastest painter in the world. It could take me about 2-3 months to get one done. It’s the time and effort and passion for them that I want people to see. So, I try to clean up my lines when I’m drawing it out, and I try to make it as clear as time or if I’m on a schedule, yes there might be a little roughness but still I want it to show you that yes he messes up some but it still is beautiful.

A new exhibit curated from private collections and the Trinidad Museum, opening during September’s Arts Alive!

Join us for a journey into the vibrant world of Brian Duane Tripp (1945-2022), a celebrated member of the Karuk Tribe whose artistic prowess and cultural contributions have left an indelible mark on history. Including the mural on the Clarke’s building in Opera Alley, “ The Sun Set Twice On The People That Day.”

Born and raised in the heart of Klamath, CA, Brian's journey began amidst the rich tapestry of Karuk culture. From a young age, his artistic talents shone brightly, earning him accolades such as "Most Talented" during his high school years. Yet his path would soon take a profound turn when he answered the call to serve in the Vietnam War, an experience that deeply influenced his artistic vision upon his return.

At Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt), Brian immersed himself in the study of art, eventually becoming a pioneer in Native American Art History. His creations, spanning from the 1980s to the early 2000s, are hailed as the zenith of his creativity, blending traditional Karuk themes with poignant commentary on the injustices faced by Indigenous peoples. His artworks, often using newspapers as canvas to amplify political statements, have graced prestigious institutions from the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento to the New Museum in New York City.

On September 07th, during Eureka Arts Alive at the Clarke Historical Museum, we invite you to delve into Brian Tripp's world. Explore how his art reflects not just his remarkable talent, but also his deep-rooted commitment to preserving heritage and advocating for rights. Discover pieces that speak volumes about resilience, identity, and the enduring spirit of cultural revitalization.

Don't miss this opportunity to witness a pivotal chapter in California's Indigenous art movement and celebrate the legacy of Brian Tripp. Mark your calendars and join us for an evening that promises to inspire, educate, and resonate with the powerful narratives woven through Brian Tripp's remarkable artworks.
