The Eureka Woman’s Club made a donation of over $1800 to the Penny Pines program of the US Forest Service. A portion of the proceeds from the January 2024 Waffle breakfast were set aside to support this important program for our forest lands. The Eureka Woman’s Club has been a supporter of the Penny Pines program since the 1980s. Donations for this program may be sent to the Eureka Woman’s Club at P.O. Box 778, Eureka, CA 95502, or go to www.eurekawomansclub.org.
The Penny Pines program started in 1941 and was initially supported by the San Francisco Sports-women’s Association. The program dedicated to the reforestation of national forests in California. Forests in California cover some 20 million acres or about 1/5 of the state. That is equal to an area just slightly larger than the state of South Carolina. Stretching from the Mexican border to Oregon, these forests include a variety of terrain and vegetation types. These areas of great beauty and majestic stature are plagued by divesting problems, such as natural and man-caused fire, pests, and disease. These cause vast depletion and destruction of the national forests in California.

Women Who Saved the Redwoods

ANOTHER OF OUR EUREKA FAVORITES: SHE FORMED SIX WOMEN’S CLUBS AND PLAYED A DECISIVE ROLE IN WINNING STATE FUNDING FOR TODAY’S AVENUE OF THE GIANTS

Annie Zane Murray inspired a save-the-redwoods movement among Humboldt County women in 1913 with a belief that rose eloquently above the hard lumbering ethic that defined her region: “Civilization demands that the natural wonders of the world be preserved for future generations to study and enjoy.”

When Murray died decades later at age 96 in 1960, no one remembered the sheer force of her energy in women’s political activism and the early redwoods campaigns.

A rare college-educated woman (San Jose State) in the remote wilds of Northern California, she formed half a dozen women’s clubs in Humboldt County and established the Humboldt County Federation of Women’s Clubs at her home in 1908. Later, she became a key player in the Humboldt County’s Women’s Save the Redwoods League.

In 1921, Murray and women’s league president Laura Perrott Mahan ( #7) escorted T.M. Wright of San Jose, Chairman of the State Assembly Ways and Means Committee, on a tour of the county’s redwood forests. Murray and Mahan persuaded him to champion a $300,000 Redwoods Preservation Bill, which subsequently sailed through the legislative process and bought 1,600 acres of redwoods along today's Avenue of the Giants
