Denver Botanic Garden reciprocal membership allowed me into the Norfolk Botanical Gardens for the 26 minutes I had spare before picking the boys up at the adjacent Norfolk airport! It’s huge! They have boat tours! The bonsai are very different plants, but about the same number as DBG. Definitely going back.
Mom’s rosemary needed a trim!
I cut a few sprigs to root in her awesome stash of terracotta pots, potting soil conveniently beside her newly relocated potting bench. (What a mom, right?) As I stripped leaves from the lower 1/3 of the sprigs and then stuck them into the filled pots (current thinking is that rooting hormone isn’t that helpful, but we shall see…), I thought about how to use them.
Dried rosemary is unnecessary when you have such a happy plant. The leg of lamb in the fridge is preseasoned, from Trader Joe’s, I believe. Ah, but the 4th of July is upon us, and our dear friends are joining us at the beach, so it is time for Grovers! This delicious concoction was named at a long ago 4th on the Eastern Shore of VA, at Oak GROVE. We debate the exact recipe, but it includes rosemary simple syrup, grapefruit juice, something fizzy and something alcoholic. 1:1 sugar to boiling water, and I probably threw in way too much rosemary, but we’ll be ready to celebrate! Happy Fourth preparations!
Another thing I learned today: shrimp season in VB is September-January! I had previously been unaware of shrimp seasonality. Silly me!

‘Lenten Rose’ hellebores enchant as a late winter blooming, shade living plant, highly toxic to nibblers. They bloom as soon as the snow melts off my north facing front border which receives NO direct sun. Properly conditioned, they are long lasting cut flowers and have that graceful, just in from the garden feel, even with snow still on the ground. Love.

Having fun playing with the leftovers! Carnations get a bad rap, but they are long lasting, the variegations are enchanting, and before internationalization of the flower industry, Denver used to be the biggest producer. I like how the rose hips here break up what might be a saccharine combo of purple, blue, and white. I planted paperwhites in this brass planter, and thought I’d stick in a few stems to dress it up, and just kept going. I hope you get to do what makes you happy, too, this holiday! Thanks for making it possible for me.
