A moment for the Exposed Beams! ππ€€β€οΈ
Much of our work at TSH has been focused on the exterior of the home and in our 1880 Carriage Barn. This living room, however, required our immediate attention after the Jan 2024 Windstorm that came through with 60-70mph winds and caused catastrophic damage. The old standing seam roof was ripped back like a can of sardines and, of course, it rained the next morning! π§οΈ The sag in the living room ceiling didnβt show itself until nearly 3 weeks after the storm.
With an old house also comes extra obstacles, a lot of unknowns and expenses. The old ceiling contained asbestos so it was a whole process to have it removed safely. Once the removal was complete, we sort of took a liking to an all wood ceiling but it also exposed plumbing and wiring, which we thought was not a good look. After much humming and hawing, we decided to leave the beams exposed (OBVI!) but covered up the bays in between with sheetrock. And since we loved our trim color so much we committed to making the walls the same color. The color is Nantucket Grey for those whoβd like to recreate the look. π
Our finishing touch was coating the beams with Boiled Linseed Oil to help protect and seal the wood. We just love how cozy this room feels now with the hand hewn beams above.
