HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING IN 6 MONTHS

The main difference between planning a wedding in standard 12-18 months and planning a wedding in 6 months is all about your choices. Couples who start planning early are more likely to land their first choice venues, vendors, and even photographers. Depending on the style of the wedding you want to have, you may still end up with exactly the celebration you’ve always wanted! If you’re easy going, you won’t have any trouble! Here’s how it goes:

Budget
You’re going to have to secure your budget first and foremost. Your budget will determine the route you’re going to take and lead you in a certain direction. You’ll be able to pick a venue a lot more easily, and then you can proceed with picking out your theme and/or style. If you ever start to feel stressed out, just remember to focus on the wedding you’re trying to achieve.

Dress
Another thing to get done first is your bridal gown. Most dresses take 8-10 months to get ordered and fitted by the manufacturer, so it’s best to shop off the racks or pay a fee to rush your dream gown.

Researching Vendors
Start calling around to venues, photographers, and other vendors to see what their availability is. That will help you pick a date and go from there. You’ll then be able to officially announce it and send out your wedding invitations with all the details! It’s easier to go this route rather than picking a date and being rejected left and right because it’s already taken. Remember to be flexible, because there’s a reason couples take longer than 6 months to plan a wedding. Consider getting married on a Friday or even a Sunday! Once you have these big ticket items out of the way, is there really time for Save The Dates? Thank goodness for the internet! There is no harm in sending out an email or post about your upcoming nuptials.

Time to Book!
Now it’s time to start booking your Wedding Planner, officiant, any wedding rentals, caterers, and other vendors. Meet caterers and test menus, taste cakes and hire a baker, book a DJ and/or band, find a great florist, buy your wedding rings, register for gifts, order bridesmaid dresses and suits, and finalize your stationery suite. Consider getting your bridesmaid dresses from department stores or shops that sell formal gowns. This will skip any ordering process from manufacturers. Also, know that you might not land your first-choice vendors, but you’ll end up with a beautiful wedding no matter what. The important thing is to just keep an open mind.

Final Details
At this point, everything should be secured, and it’s not a bad idea to take inventory of what you have completed. If you’re planning to go on a honeymoon immediately after your wedding, now is the time to book your travel. Go to a travel agent to ensure that your trip is booked for you and everything is completely set within your itinerary. If the prices or season just aren’t right, consider waiting a few months to take the trip you deserve!

Get Ready…
A month before your wedding is officially crunch time! If you thought the last 6 months were a crunch, then get ready!
Meet with stylists and makeup artists for trials, book nail appointments, day of transportation, and last minute decoration details. Have one last chat with your photographer to ensure your shot list is a go and you’ll get all the photos you want! It’s now time to sit back, relax, and enjoy your wedding day! You’ve worked so hard and come this far, you know it will be absolutely perfect!

REGISTRY 101: FOR THE COUPLES THAT ALREADY LIVE TOGETHER
It’s far from uncommon for a couple to get engaged and go through the traditional wedding planning process while already have had been living with their significant other for some time now. Maybe there are kids thrown into the mix! Regardless, your home is probably stocked with everything you need because you’ve been living day-to-day with those things! But who doesn’t want to miss out on the joys of registering? Here are some things that you can register for, even though you’ve already got it all.
Upgrades
Walk around your house and make a list of all the things you have had for years now and could simply just use an upgrade or replacement of. Let’s take towels for example; there is nothing greater than a soft big blanket towel to curl up into after you get out of the shower. If your towels are old and dingy, register for some new ones! Or what about those baking sheets that are just ready to be thrown away? There’s another thing to add to your list! Just go through each room and look for items that you wouldn’t mind replacing!
Honeymoon
We hope you’re still planning on your dream honeymoon, aka the best way to end all your wedding hard work. Most travel agents will offer a registry option for your friends and family to donate to your honeymoon fund rather than a traditional gift or cash card. This is an exciting way to register, especially if you don’t have anything to register for.
Things Outside of Your Home
Take this part outdoors! There are a lot of outdoorsy couples who live together and fill their registry with hiking gear, camping must-haves, and all sorts of adventuresome items. If you’re into something like that, there is no harm in registering for them! Bike racks, kayaks, tents, and even upgraded luggage pieces are all great alternatives.
High-Tech Kitchen Items You Don’t Have
This is the fun part of registering especially if you’re saving your guests money by not having to buy pots, pans, bedding, etc. Think of a kitchen item that you’ve been wanting for forever but it’s just out of reach financially? Put it on your registry! A fancy new chefs knife set, SodaStream Jet, Keurigs, fancy food processors and blenders, indoor grills, or whatever else your heart desires! There are benefits of registering and already having the basics.
Personalized Items
Lastly, think about items that are personal to spruce up your home! Decor items are always a fun thing to open at your bridal shower, especially when they’re personalized for your new name together. This is another great alternative for your registry when you can’t think of anything to register for.

7 Steps for Setting (and following!) a Wedding Budget
Setting a wedding essentials budget is a smart way to stay on track with spending during your wedding planning. Here we offer a practical step-by-step guide to help keep things sailing smoothly toward your big day.

Step 1: Take a Realistic Look at Your Finances

If you and your fiance are handling to the bulk of the wedding costs, figure up how you can each comfortably contribute to the budget without going into the red (starting a marriage in debt is not a wise decision!). Money is a touchy subject, and being honest and upfront about how much you have to spend on your wedding will not only squash confusion, it will also lay the foundation for how to resolve money issues once you’re married.

Step 2: Be selective with the guest list

An important step in setting your wedding essentials budget is to determine how many people you will want to invite to your ceremony and reception. The guest list dictates the amount of space you’ll need to accommodate your well-wishers, the quantity of food caterers must prepare for the reception meal, and other key budgetary considerations. Besides, it’s a no-brainer that the less people you invite, the less you’ll need to spend!

Step 3: Verify if others plan to contribute to your wedding expenses

Families of the bride and groom will often offer to pay for some—if not all—of the wedding essentials expenses. If you’re uncomfortable asking your parents for cash, how about asking them to purchase certain items like the wedding cake, or let them pick up the tab for the rehearsal dinner. Whether your family pays a portion of your wedding costs or foots the entire bill, having others contribute to your wedding budget will certainly relieve the stress of limited cash flow.

Step 4: Open a separate "wedding" account to track spending

Once you’ve pulled your wedding funds together, you’ll want to place them into a bank account solely devoted to paying wedding expenses. This way you won’t mix everyday money with your specially allocated funds.

Step 5: Determine where you want to spend the most/least

Some wedding essentials-centered items and services automatically come with a hefty price tag. Point blank. Period. But knowing where to shell out the big bucks and where to cut costs can make all the difference in your planning. Create a list of wedding services that you don’t mind spending more money on, and those that you’ll be fine with scaling back from. For example, you might want to hire a pricey, but renowned wedding photographer to snap every moment of your wedding day, but opt for a beer and wine only reception instead of an open bar. No matter where you choose to save or spend, it should be something you can both agree on.

Step 6: Pick a financially-feasible wedding essentials date

Certain times of year are more expensive for having a wedding. Holidays generate the most money in the wedding industry (Labor Day weekend, Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Years). Vendors are also in higher demand, so expect an up-charge in services if you’re setting a date around these times. However, if you’re able to show flexibility with your wedding date, you’ll find some great deals. And never be afraid to negotiate—many wedding wedding essentials vendors are willing to work around your budget.

Step 7: Resist the urge to splurge

It’s easy to get swept up in all things opulent when dreaming of your wedding day. You want everything to be perfect . . . but not at the expense of a small fortune. As Step 5 states that while it’s OK to pay a little more for big ticket items (i.e. food and beverage, photography, floral design), you should still remember to impart good judgment with your spending. For instance, as much as you’d love to give each of your bridal attendants Swarovski crystal picture frames as "thank you" gifts, there are less-expensive options they’ll appreciate just as much as the pricier versions. Remember to shop smarter when selecting items for your wedding; you’ll soon find that most everything under the sun has a less-expensive counterpart.

Setting a wedding essentials budget is the best way to manage spending as you plan your wedding. Knowing exactly what you can (and cannot) afford will help you better communicate with vendors, and each other, as you prepare for the wedding day of your dreams.

8 Difficult People You Will Encounter While Wedding Planning
by Kim Forrest Wedding Wire

For the most part, your relationships with family members and friends should pretty much stay the same throughout your wedding planning process. However, you may notice that certain loved ones may change their behavior—becoming overly dramatic, jealous, or simply unavailable. There are a lot of reasons why a friend or family member might act differently while you’re engaged, but your goal should be to maintain your friendships as best you can throughout this process. Here are some types of people you may encounter while planning—and the best way to keep your relationships intact.

The wannabe wedding planner
There will be people who want to be super-involved with planning your wedding, to the point of becoming overbearing. They will text you centerpiece ideas at all hours, want to be present for venue tours and tastings, and generally insert themselves whenever possible. While it’s nice to have a friend/family member who cares, it’s getting annoying.
How to handle: Give the person a specific task to complete, whether it’s creating the welcome bags, putting together favors, or assembling invitations. If the person feels like he or she is accomplishing something important, they’ll likely leave you alone.

The disappearing friend
While you may find that many friends and family members are interested in your wedding planning and want to help, there may be others who simply “disappear” and don’t seem excited for you. In fact, it feels like they are avoiding you all together.
How to handle: There may be several reasons why your friend does not want to be involved with your wedding planning. It could be jealousy, or perhaps there are other issues in this person’s life that prevent him or her from participating (loss of a job, an ill family member, etc.). Be as understanding as possible, and don’t expect too much. Invite him or her to a meal or activity that has nothing to do with your wedding—maybe they’ll open up about their feelings, but don’t pry or be critical.

The reappearing acquaintance
A friend you haven’t spoken to since high school found out that you’re engaged and all of a sudden is trying to be your bestie. She wants to be involved in all aspects of planning your wedding, and you’re not even close!
How to handle: While it’s admirable that the person wants to help, you’re probably a bit weirded out that they came out of nowhere to assist you. Let the person know that your mom/maid of honor/wedding planner is taking care of most of the details, and while you appreciate her willingness to help, you’re all set.

The overly-critical family member
It seems like every time you share any wedding-related detail with this person, from your color scheme to your attire, he has something negative to say. It’s causing you to doubt your decision-making.
How to handle: Stop sharing anything wedding-related with this person immediately and if they ask about it, say that you want your wedding details to be a surprise.

The “trying to score an invite” co-worker
Your co-worker clearly is making it clear that he “can’t wait” for your wedding, but he isn’t even on the guest list! This could get awkward.
How to handle: You need to nip this one in the bud so your co-worker isn’t surprised and disappointed when he doesn’t receive an invite. The next time he brings up your wedding, simply say that while you really appreciate his good wishes, you’re keeping your guest list small and unfortunately couldn’t invite as many people as you wanted to.

The prying relative
“When are you going to have a baby?” “Why do you want to marry him/her?” “How much will your wedding cost?” It can be really shocking when people feel like they can ask you super-personal questions, and you might find yourself at a loss for words.
How to handle: Try to handle these prying questions with a sense of humor. You can even say “That’s really personal, Aunt Joan!” and immediately change the subject. Don’t feel like you have to answer any questions you’re uncomfortable with.

The attention hog
You may have a loved one who is trying to steal your spotlight at every turn. From wanting to wear an inappropriate dress to asking to sing at your reception, you’re concerned that this person might ruin your big day.
How to handle: Give this person specific wedding-day tasks that won’t allow her to go overboard with the dramatics. For example, she can give a reading at the ceremony, but can’t do a solo dance performance at your reception.

The person who doesn’t understand wedding etiquette
You may have friends or family members who “forget” to RSVP, try to add plus-ones who aren’t invited, or asks to bring their kids to your wedding when it’s adults-only.
How to handle: Bring up the issue with your guest directly but politely. Let them know why you can’t accommodate additional guests/kids, or that you’ll need them to RSVP ASAP. Don’t cave and let them get away with bad behavior, but there’s no need to start a screaming match either.

10 WAYS TO SAVE FOR A WEDDING

1. Rank Your Priorities
What facets of your wedding are most important to you? Focus on areas that make your heart go pitter-patter, and you'll feel OK about skimping on the rest. As for what guests tend to remember, according to a survey conducted by St. Louis Bride and Groom magazine, 81 percent of guests say the entertainment is the most memorable part of a wedding.

2. Recruit Friends
Think of it as cost-free outsourcing. Gather your inner circle, play to their strengths (e.g., assign lettering to the friend with the most beautiful handwriting), and turn the prep into a party.
Asking family and friends to offer help or services that align with their talents in lieu of a gift is a great way to keep your wedding on a budget.

3. Select a Family-Style Meal
Consider a tasty family-style dinner, like a gourmet pasta bar, in place of a three-course plated meal. Select several choices guests will love, including meat and vegetarian options, for a substantial and crowd-pleasing dinner.
Family-owned restaurants are always the first place to check – they will almost always go the extra mile to make your wedding special and are generally more understanding of your budget needs.

4. Go Minimal with the Flowers
Instead of spending boatloads of money on flowers that will die shortly after the reception, keep it simple but elegant — for instance, a single rose for each bridesmaid and a very small bouquet for the bride. If you know someone with a rose bush, you can actually make your own bouquets the day before the ceremony by cutting the roses yourself and trimming away the thorns.
Another inexpensive wedding idea – go with fake flowers instead. It’s likely that no one will even notice, and you could save a bundle by making the arrangements yourself well ahead of time.
Be smart about what types of flowers you choose, and think about how you can repurpose them throughout the wedding.

5. Buy Dresses Off the Rack – and on Sale
If you want to save on bridesmaid dresses, try to avoid ordering custom dresses altogether. Instead, head to a few stores with dresses on sale and see if you can all find something “off the rack.”
This works best if your colors are chosen ahead of time and if the store you’re shopping at carries plenty of sizes. To minimize spats within your wedding party, you can also shop ahead of time and only have them try on dresses you already approve of.
Another inexpensive wedding idea: Instead of buying new dresses, have every bridesmaid wear a particular color dress they already own.
At sites such as preownedweddingdresses.com and oncewed.com, you can find gently used -- and sometimes never-worn -- designer dresses at a fraction of the price you would pay in a salon. They can also be ideal places to search if you've already found your dream gown and are simply waiting for your fairy godmother to wave her sale wand.

6. Wedding Invitations
The wedding invitations are another category where you can save a ton of money by doing part of it or all of it yourself. Consider providing your own cardstock to the printer or have guests RSVP on your wedding website or app instead of on a reply card. You'll save tons on paper and postage, and you're more likely to get responses from the majority of your guests. Be sure to include your phone number or home address for elderly guests who may not be as tech-savy.
Doing destination I do's? That means lots of paper. Instead of printing individual invites, itineraries, and maps, have your stationer create one trifold containing all of the important details. You'll save big by printing together. Plus, guests will be less likely to lose the important information since it's all in one place.

7. Borrow Stereo Equipment or Use Yours From Home
Rather than hiring a DJ, just use your own home stereo equipment, or equipment you borrow from a friend. Put speakers around the dance floor area – there’s no need to spread them around the reception room. Create a playlist on your iPod that features a few hours’ worth of your favorite songs – or see if you have a friend who might want to make a playlist for you. Choosing your own songs is a great way to personalize your entire experience. It's easy to program a wedding march as well as a playlist of tunes that will see you through the cocktail hour. (For bonus points, include a line on your R.S.V.P. cards asking guests to write in a song they'd like to hear.)

8. Hire Another Type of Pro
Have you always dreamed of a violinist or harpist playing as you walk down the aisle? A professional musician can be quite costly. Luckily, local music schools have teachers — who can play quite well — that will happily perform at weddings for a fraction of the cost. Sit in on a lesson to make sure they know their stuff.
One place to look for lower-cost musicians is your local university’s music department.
Contact them and ask if there are any students who are studying a particular instrument or vocal work and see if they’re available to provide music for a wedding. It can help them develop their resume and save you on this typically pricey part of your wedding.
This goes for photographers as well — if there’s an art school or photography program at your local college, see if there are any talented students or recent grads who would be willing to photograph your wedding at a discount for the portfolio-building experience and exposure they’d receive.
There are many talented photographers who haven't made a name for themselves yet, and their lack of fame can save you a fortune. If you fall hard for a photographer who's in high demand, ask if she'll refer you to a lower-priced colleague (just make sure you like his work before you commit).

9. Cut Down Your Guest List
Although you might be tempted to throw everyone you know on your guest list, that isn’t always a great idea. With each addition, you’re adding additional costs while also making your wedding less intimate. This will slash your catering costs and save on invitations and even the number of centerpieces.

10. Initiate an Officiant
There are many unexpected costs that can inflate your budget; an officiant can be one of them. If that's the case for you, consider having your vows administered by a trusted relative or friend. This will equal a big savings and also make for a more personalized ceremony.
