WITH WEDDINGS AT A COMPLETE STANDSTILL I've had more time to enjoy learning new skills like baking bread. This is my first try making and now I want to make it every day! Used my flour to add depth of flavor and robustness and I was not disappointed.

QUARANTINE RADISHES! Planted at the beginning of quarantine and ready to eat now.
These are mild and delicious. I eat them alone as a snack or slice thin on toast. Or lightly sautéed with butter, salt and pepper. So GOOD! The greens are great in green smoothies or lightly sautéed with the roots.

Have you guys heard of cherry or strawberry guava? I had never heard of this variety of guava till moving to Fallbrook. This is the guava for people who don't like the musky tropical flavor of most guava. Its mild and sweet and the perfect size for snacking. The fruits are the size of cherries and you can just pop them in your mouth, no peeling or deseeding. They come in red known as cherry or strawberry guava and yellow known as lemon guava. Our little tree, it's less than 3 ft tall is literally so covered with fruit the branches are close to breaking! Its prolific and delicious and I've never seen the fruit available to buy in stores. It is a beautiful evergreen small tree that can be pruned into a "fedge" (food hedge) as likes to say. It's beautiful as a landscaping tree with lovely fruit you can eat. My Sunday sermon on the glories of Cherry Guava!

In yesterday's rain event the dug for the new coffee plants were doing their job, capturing, slowing and sinking rain where it's needed for the coffee plants. So important to hold rain the earth so it doesn't become a damaging force in the environment.

Was gifted some ice cream bean "fruits" the other day. Do you guys know about bean? It's an amazing tree to have in your sub tropical, tropical or Mediterranean permaculture garden or food forest. It's a leguminious nitrogen fixing pioneer species that grows incredibly fast, produces tons of fruit and nitrogen mulch. It's a fantastic companion for coffee and cacao plants providing shade and feeding the soil. From just 5 pods we got about 60 seeds that we will plant out for nursery stock. We'll be planting lot's of trees this year and adding them to our available to purchase along with all great for It's called but I really think it should have been called cotton candy bean. You eat the pith surrounding the seeds which is light and fluffy and sweet. Kids love it!

On Tuesday we started a new mini-food forest on the property. We put in fruit trees as a main crop and sheet mulched the area. After that we planted support species of plants around the trees and seeded all the mulch with herbs and flowers to create a poly-culture. We used seeds from some of our favorite seed companies and seeds saved by friends and family. We included parsley, dill, cilantro in the shade and oregano and thyme in the sunnier spots. We also planted nasturtiums, hyacinth been, and hollyhocks, all edible flowers. Can't wait to see how this new planting system takes off!

Yesterday we started a new mini food forest with our awesome farm intern One of the great things about permaculture is that it takes things that most people consider waste and recycles them into food! My floral design work Tularosa Flowers produces a lot of waste. The green waste we compost separately because it most of the commercially farmed flowers used for weddings are sprayed with pesticides. But in addition to that there is constant stream of packaging waste coming onto the farm as well. To block weeds and build soil for our new mini food forest we used cardboard on the less steep areas and newspaper on the steeper area to sheet mulch. Once this was in place we mulched with wood chip from trees that a neighbor had to remove. This whole system not only creates a low input food growing system, but it also builds soil and keeps waste out of landfills and transforms it into food! Over winter we'll finish this project with food forest on both sides of a path that guests take to get cell phone access on the farm. What's better than walking along a path picking fresh food as you go? @ Fallbrook, California

We were super thrilled to have our very first permaculture intern on the farm today. did an incredible job digging micro swales, fishscale swales prepping and planting a mini food forest to line the path that guests take to visit the chicken and ducks and get cell service on the farm. In one day we planted 4 dwarf peach trees and tree collards and seeded lab lab, parsley, cilantro, dill, nasturtiums, hollyhock, snap peas, kale and broccoli throughout the food forest. We are excited to welcome others interested in permaculture so if you've been curious and want learn and get your hands dirty, now is the time to contact us, we've got lots of permaculture lined up for the winter planting season.

Have any of you heard of Mirto? It is a liquor made in Sardegna from the ripe berries of the myrtle bush which is native to Corisica and Sardegna and much of the Mediterranean stretching through Africa and India. I lived in Sardegna as an exchange student in high school so of course it holds a special place in my heart. For my last wedding of 2018 I used myrtle which is also a common florist greenery and it happened to be covered with berries. Because I get it direct from the farmer who I know uses no pesticides, after the wedding I gathered all the berries and put up some mirto! In 2 months it should be ready to drink!

From Wikipedia

"Myrtus communis is used in the islands of Sardinia and Corsica to produce an aromatic liqueur called Mirto by macerating it in alcohol. Mirto is one of the most typical drinks of Sardinia and comes in two varieties: mirto rosso (red) produced by macerating the berries, and mirto bianco (white) produced from the less common yellow berries and sometimes the leaves.[10]" @ De Luz, California
