In many cultures feasts are associated with traditional and tasty food. So is New Year's Eve Dinner.
Everything was planned around two concepts: Guests and Food.
We had to impress the guests with food! That’s why the dinner had to be not only tasty, but also abundant.. Dolma, vegetarian dolma, pork, chicken, crepes with various fillings, olivye and many many more.
Housewives were developing traditional recipes with new variations, adding new spices or ingredients: honey cakes with apricot jam, vinaigrette with red beans, sweets with coins inside to identify the luckiest of the year to come. So much joy, fun, smells and flavors.
That smell of tangerines and basturma, the infinite boxes of tarragon lemonade, candies, champagne.
Champagne was allowed to teens, and it was a great and unique opportunity to make a wish! The most important part was to drink the champagne during the 12 bell strikes to mark the start of the year. Some of us thought that if we write the wish on a piece of paper, burn it and put the ash into the champagne, the wish would definitely come true :)
After midnight there was an active comings and goings until the early morning. Neighbors, friends and relatives were rushing to visit everybody and inviting everyone to their place. It was a big offense not to make a return visit afterwards…until the Old New Year celebration.
