Small Business
There’s something I’ve been learning lately.
A town is as small as you make it.
A customer came in for a birthday gift the other week and left with a gift and my mom’s German chocolate cake recipe. I watched Briana keep a toddler occupied for a good while today while her mom shopped. Mama Jo cried twice with customers last Saturday - once with tears of gratitude another with tears of understanding. Last week a customer and I laughed and laughed as we swapped stories about teenage antics as she ate the caramels by the register and kept repeating “put it on my tab” 🤣
There’s those who have made flowers a weekly routine, come in monthly to stock up on cards, plants, have been fully converted to our locally made soaps and scrubs, have been moved by the stories and families behind our products.
It’s these connections, these opportunities to intersect in a space that brings laughter, smiles, and sometimes tears that creates the sense of small in business that we all crave. It’s all the small businesses within the small business, the way you elevate and support the artists and makers, families and farmers, believing in the hands that build something to offer you.
It’s getting to know each other’s names, families and favorites.

On Wednesday I was wondering how in the world I over-ordered so much. I just couldn’t say no to any farmer or any flower. They kept coming and coming and luckily they kept going and going… thank you so much for all of the walk ins and the orders this week. It’s so fun to wrap all of this beauty up and share it with you! We were so fortunate to be able to serve every customer that came with so many beautiful, local flowers. 🤍

Wednesday is February 1st and you know what that means! We are live again on the website and ready for your orders for this weekend!
With the exception of our usual summer break in July, Washday will have now have availability for pick up every Wednesday-Saturday. @thenestonmainbelair pick ups will resume February 10th and we are offering delivery for Valentine’s Day with the hope that we will be able to offer more consistent delivery services very soon!

I actually won these in a drawing last weekend when I attended the @lavenderandposies vision board class. I was super stoked to get these home and into that milk glass vase.
And do you know what this means my friends? We will start having local flowers at the shop earlier than I thought! One of our missions here at @washdayfloral is to support our local farmers so we will cross our fingers for L&P tulip bunches next week and we also have freshly cut eucalyptus from @belvederefarmflowers on our radar!

I snuck in last Monday and finished up this winter courthouse wedding. After the whirlwind of a holiday season it was nice to be in the settled shop, music switching from Christmas to modern folk, fingers dancing around a boutonnière and three cuff corsages. Thank you @lenorasflowers for help with the beautiful bouquet.
We’ve been traveling this weekend. I now make it a habit to check out retail gift and flower shops in the areas we travel. I can’t wait to share with you another flower field trip!

We had a special moment at the shop on Friday when the freezing rain turned to snow. Our first snow at the shop. And although it didn’t stick to the ground, it was still magical.
When you grow up in a desert, the snow will always be magical.
I was so glad we were open and that there were customers and friends there to share the moment with us.
At the beginning of last year I spent 8 weeks with @kdlifecoaching1 doing a program with her. We talked about goals and priorities, made action plans and talked about dreams and visions.
She just happened to be at the shop during this moment when she caught me filming, enamored by the snow. She hugged me with tears in her eyes and said she was so happy that this dream came true. And then I had tears in my eyes too! It was so surreal. A moment I will never forget.
Thank you so much for being a part of this. For wanting a small local business to be successful and for being a member of this incredible community that has been built around not only beautiful flowers, but all the beautiful people that grow them and sell them, the people that prepare and condition, arrange and design them and for all of you that bring them into your homes and events and place them in the hands of those you love and care about.

Set in downtown Provo, Utah, Foxglove knows how to cater to its’ young collegiate audience with a colorful hip vibe and fun, friendly service.
Foxglove has worked hard over the years to create a strong brand presence and they’ve nailed it. You can always tell something is Foxglove before you know it’s from Foxglove.
That’s our aim at Washday too.
I’d have more shop pictures, but I was too busy working! I helped owner Miriam knock out a dozen centerpieces and I think just as many if not more boutonnières.
Work, chat, work, chat.
As we worked, the door was consistently revolving - in walked customer after customer. Miriam knew most by name.
The atmosphere was casual and fun, friendly. They had a “flower bar” which wasn’t really a typical flower bar, but a counter to sit at and chat while you wait for your order. I can see how that feature in her shop made things feel welcoming. Come in, take a seat, tell us about your day.
I’ll see if I can snap some pics from the foxes at the shop to show you that area.
My biggest takeaways from Foxglove:
▪️ Create a welcoming space that invites a customer to be a part of the process.
▪️ Find a signature style.
▪️ Be fun. Be colorful. Be creative.
▪️Create opportunities for photographing design in a fun way.
▪️Get to know your customers.
Miriam and I talked at length about finding your niche, work-life balance, florist burnout and how to prevent it, taking on work that inspires you, letting go of work that isn’t a good fit.

Hi there! This week I will be sharing flower shop inspiration from my travels this summer 💛.

Today’s visit: FLOWERFUL 🌼
I spent some time in Southern California with my Aunt Holly after my grandmother’s memorial service in mid-June. She’s an artist (@inkinglyyours) and didn’t mind at all a few stops at flower shops. Another local florist pointed us toward @goflowerful in Laguna Woods- she had mentioned that she focuses on funeral flowers, and refers customers to Flowerful for “every day” flowers.
Flowerful was adorable. They had a strong brand presence that was fresh and modern. Their display cooler was impressive and employees were all very helpful. After I mentioned my flower shop intentions, they walked me through their ordering processes and shared some of their advice on designing space.
Takeaways: I loved the option and clarity of their “menu board” and the open, airy feel of the shelving. Their tags and branding were fantastic. Loved hearing them talk about how they manipulated their shop to create more design space for bigger holidays. Dried section was fun, plants were beautiful.
I left inspired! I also left wishing I could have that enormous display cooler! Wow!! So amazing.

It was such a treat to be at the Carroll Manor dance recital this weekend. One dad mentioned as he purchased a petite bouquet “this is definitely one of those big milestones for me as a dad”. So sweet. 💛🌷
Almost 100 bouquets full of sunshiney ranunculus and garden roses, bright blue delphinium and luscious stock, wrapped up in tulle and glittery gold. Thank you @alsunflower for all your help and for all the laughs. Thank you Carroll Manor for having us!
