Summertime means it's time for our favourite long drink 👉 G’spritzter 💦😍 The mixture of 50% fresh Austrian wine with 50% sparkling water is a brilliant Austrian invention that suits every summery occasion ☀️
Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling or Gelber- & Roter Muskateller are particularly fitting well and offer infinitely light drinking pleasure.

Feeling a little under the weather, I decided to make some simple comfort food that relies on canned goods....that I didn't actually have. I had my heart set on Tamale Pie after tasting it in my mind, so I made the core elements by throwing together a copycat Jiffy Cornbread Mix recipe, Creamed Corn from frozen with a little magic and immersion blender instead of a can, and this Enchilada Sauce from scratch.

Sure, next time I might use some real dried chiles and research authenticity, but this recipe was easy and full of flavor with none of the chemicals and questionable ingredients. Ingredients probably cost me 10 cents. I felt a little better already in composing the whole dish using stone ground cornmeal, unbleached flour, unbleached sugar, olive oil, and no MSG or high fructose corn syrup, etc. I did use leftover oniony beef & pork broth because I had it and needed to use it up, fresh garlic because I live now in some alternate reality where my house has run out of garlic powder (still no one has called the police!?), and I narrowly avoided disaster when I started squeezing the tube of senf instead of tomato paste (removed it in the nick of time!). Thanks, tired brain. The cinnamon was a nice touch and I'm still deciding if I like it better before or after the vinegar.

Enchilada sauce is so easy to make! This red enchilada sauce recipe comes together in ten minutes. I've tried all the other recipes and this is the best!

My friend Kristen from one of our favorite German bands, has just lost her 22 year old son in a terrible tragedy and I’m asking again for the help of the community. A Celebration of Life will be held for Gabriel Ramirez at Christ Church in Fairfax Station, VA from about 2-4 pm on 8/31/2024. Fortunately, their venue includes a full kitchen, hot beverage station, tables/chairs, and linens. The Church may donate desserts. Hausfrau Catering will be donating the food portion of refreshments for 200-250 people using a menu of Gabriel’s favorite foods. Colors will include darker blues and/or white.

We would appreciate assistance with
💙prep ahead of time,
💙kitchen help on 8/31,
💙service staffing on 8/31 --to be provided by church volunteers🙌,
💙specific paper products,
💙design work of printed signs and menus in advance,
💙simple florals for the food tables, and
💙gas cards for volunteer staff making the round trip.

🙏UPDATED 8/31/2024 Help Request: We try to give back to our supportive community when the opportunity arises. Last year at this time, we were doing our best to feed local people after a tornado left many of us without power, water, and transportation for about a week along with tons of damage, repairs, and loss of business. No government help came, insurance helped a few later, so it was just friends & neighbors helping each other for most of the cleanup and recovery. We were all truly blessed by the power of Community.

We catered the wedding of the sweetest couple on 6/17/23. They are back in town for their first anniversary and asked for a repeat of the wedding brownies. Megan & Chuck had a ceremonial cutting cake and our Haus made Mexican | Chili and Cinnamon, Mint Chocolate, Peanut Butter, and S’mores Brownies for guests which were gobbled up before they had a chance to try one. I packaged up a fresh batch along with my amateur hydrangea “bouquet” so they can celebrate this weekend along with stops at and . Please join me in congratulating them! Fun fact: I was going to use my own hydrangeas last year to decorate the Rehearsal Dinner, but I got exactly ONE bloom on five bushes for the first time ever. This year: explosion of flowers to share. So much changes in a year…wishing everyone the same growth, abundance, and transformation! And I hope to meet the new bebe!

🍷 🍹 Fun wine combinations beyond aperol spritz. Didn’t see the Hugo on here though…

🥂A couple of days ago, the Washington Post published an article about the "German Schorle", a 2-ingredient refreshing summer drink.
🥂If you are German, then you know what a Schorle is, and if you have been to Germany in the last 20 years or so, then you also know.
🥂A Schorle most commonly refers to a mixed drink made from wine or juice and carbonated water or soda, in English "wine spritzer" or "wine schorle", or if the new name sticks, "German Schorle".

🥂The word "Schorle" is probably an abbreviation of the word "Schorlemorle" which has been around since the 18th century and which possibly relates to the Lower Bavarian word "Schurlemurle" for a mixed drink. Where this expression comes from is unclear, possibly from the Persian-Turkish "schurmur" meaning confusion or muddle. But wherever the word comes from it now stands for a mixed drink.

🥂The wine used in "Weinschorle" is often a white wine or a rosé, like Riesling, Weißherbst, or Müller-Thurgau. It should be served cold (5 C).

Names are often regional:
🥂If you mix the wine with sparkling water it is referred to as “Schorle sauer” (sour), a mix with lemon soda it’s “Schorle süß” (sweet), or “Schorle süß-sauer” if you mix wine with sparkling water and lemon soda.
🥂The ratio of wine to water is normally 1:1, but in Palatinate, there’s more wine than water in a Schorle. There is also special kind of Schorle called "Persching" which is dialect for Pfirsich - peach. It is a mixture of a rosé and orange soda giving it a peach color.
🥂Other words for this drink are "Gespritzter", though in Hesse, a “Gespritzter” is a mix of apple wine and sparkling water.
🥂In Austria, a Schorle is called a “G'spritzter” or “Spritzer”. A Sommerspritzer is made with more water than wine. In an Almweiß or Tiroler, an herb soda like Almdudler is used instead or in addition of water. A Kaiserspritzer (emperor’s spritzer) has a shot of elderberry syrup in addition to the wine and soda water.

🥂A very popular Schorle is a mix of apple juice and sparkling water. Many people use it as a sports drink and you can even buy it premixed. I like to mix sparkling water with sweet woodruff syrup (Waldmeistersirup) that I made in May and keep in the fridge.

🍒 Would you make this? I just bought some tapioca and there’s so much local fruit in season!

When the weather was hot, my mother would serve a Chilled Fruit Soup for dinner. Not too sweet, and very refreshing. I've included some variations to the Kaltschale Recipe.

🧄 My German Oma was not thrilled when I suggested she put some garlic in her recipes. 😒 However, my Puerto Rican DNA rejoices when I get to measure garlic with my heart in a recipe that starts with 30 cloves of Garlic, along with Onion, Culantro & Cilantro, and Cubanelle peppers tossed in a blender! Accepting guesses as to what a portion of the Sofrito will be used for tonight…comment below and I might bring you a bowl! 🇵🇷

I’m grateful for happy clients who entrust me with their major events. You can give me a theme to run with and dietary restrictions, and I enjoy curating the menu selections and quantities.

My team and I provided a RAMP certified bartender, linens, and Greek/American grazing display on china with desserts, including many vegetarian options. The Waldorf School hosted and I include complimentary venue walkthrough and planning sessions. It all came together without a hitch so the host, family, and friends (80 or 160 people) can focus on celebrating instead of working.

If you don’t follow Cooking for Levi already, do yourself a favor. One video per day lights up my morning. We should all have such adventurous appetites, culinary skills, and fearlessness in the kitchen — from childhood to adulthood! I always had my kids in the kitchen, though not to this skill level. Just don’t tell me kids can’t cook and only eat chicken nuggets!
