Trees up to 30 (45) m tall and shrubs (Betula humilis, Betula nana). The maximum age of most species of birch does not exceed 100-120 years, yellow birch - 150 years, individual trees reach 300 years. Most birches are frost-resistant, with the exception of Himalayan-Chinese, some Japanese and American black birches, which are more heat-demanding.
