Excited to share that I will be participating in my first Geaux Teal Walk this Saturday at LSU's Tiger Stadium! I will be walking in memory of Alex Wilcox who passed in 2018 of ovarian cancer. I'm proud to be a part of the Legacy Event organization who established the Alex Wilcox Classic in 2019 to honor Alex. We pledged to support Geaux Teal's mission of educating women of all ages about the warning signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer by contributing to their cause.

FUN LEGACY FACT: Legacy takes great pride in its hospitality for college coaches. During our summer event, we will go through over 7,000 bottles of water and over 11,000 bottles of Gatorade. Hundreds of boxes of snacks and catered meals are consumed throughout the event as well. Why you ask? 🤔 Our goal is to keep all college coaches on-site during the event. If they get thirsty or hungry and leave the park, there's a potential scholarship lost for a player on the field.

Q&A with Jimmy Derrick, USA Regional UIC for the Southeast (SC, GA, Tenn, FL)

Jimmy Derrick has been securing the umpires for Legacy events for over 11 years now. When Legacy first started, he secured mostly from Georgia but as the tournament has grown, he procures crews from Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida and even as far north as Michigan.

We caught up with Jimmy to ask about his history and his time with Legacy.

Where did you meet Will Tomasello, Founder & Tournament Director? It was well over 20 years ago during my slow pitch days. Will was a player and I was an umpire.

How long have you been a part of USA Softball? 42 years now. I was with metro-Atlanta for 10 years then it merged with the State of Georgia and I was with them for 12 years. Have been part of the National staff since then.

What is the draw for an umpire to work Legacy Events? The biggest draw is its professionalism. Legacy events are top tier and have set the standard to which all other tournaments and showcases strive to. Legacy houses our umpires, feeds us and pays a fair wage. They care and because of that we have a very good relationship. I have umpires calling me following a Legacy event and wanting to get on the list for the next. They love working with Legacy staff because they have our backs and we have theirs as well.

How many umpires does the Legacy utilize during its events? Anywhere from 145-150.

You're full-time job is Facilities Manager for Insperity. Aside from work and softball, what are you doing in your downtime? I love to play golf and being with people (we couldn't get his handicap out of him, LOL). I'm a very positive person. You'll have a hard time hearing anything negative coming out of my mouth.

Legacy is proud to partner with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) who provide all of our on-site Athletic Trainers in Cobb County. We asked CHOA to give us some tips to share with our players, parents and coaches to prepare for their arrival in Hotlanta in July!

While playing outdoors in warm weather is enjoyable, it sometimes can be dangerous. Take these tips to prevent heat illness:

- Stay hydrated (drink plenty of fluids prior and during activity; avoid drinks with caffeine as these can lead to dehydration)
- Dress to protect (when possible, where light colored and light weight clothing; wear hats and sunglasses for protection to protect; wear a sunscreen that is at least SPF 15).
- Plan for a cooling off period (take frequent breaks during vigorous activity in shaded area and wet down)
Be prepared (know the signs of heat related illness, or risk factors that can predispose of heat illness)

Legacy Spotlight: Josh Johnson, Founder Virginia Unity Club

Virginia Unity has become a powerhouse in the last 10 years, how did you start the organization and what do you attribute to its success? July 2014, I ended my career in the education field as well as coaching in High School. At that time, I had 2 Freshman that wanted to play travel ball. The local paper, the Freelance Star, had an article featuring the areas best high school players. We reached out to all of them that were featured and they all committed to play except for one. I attribute our success to our players and coaches. We are united in what we believe that "It's not about 'U' or 'I', it's about the team!" Our players, parents and coaches all buy into that.

The Unity organization are big supporters of Legacy events. What keeps you coming back year to year? Legacy events will always be on our calendar. The college coach draw, the level of competition, the quality of the fields are like no other. I've really enjoyed the friendships I've developed through the years with Will, Rick and Becky. They take good care of us.

What is one of your favorite recruiting stories? At the 2016 Atlanta Legacy Showcase, I had a pitcher, Alyssa Bilodeau, committed to playing D3 at Salisbury with no scholarship. We were playing Georgia Impact Whiteside. After the game, I remember Rick Jeffreys came up to me and asked where my pitcher committed. He said she needs to go SEC. He made a few calls and at our next game we had 12+ D1 College Coaches watching her. Erica Ayers with Jacksonville State University came back to our hotel that evening and stayed up till 1:00 a.m. talking to Alyssa and said she wouldn't leave until Alyssa committed to an official visit. The next Monday morning, we flew Alyssa to Jacksonville and she committed with a full scholarship to play there. I always say, we're playing on house money when we come to Legacy.

The Virginia Unity organization has grown into 44 teams representing several states. It's latest addition is former Michigan great Megan Betsa who has mover her 18U Betsa/Herbert from the Lady Dukes organization.
