Sure, any person’s 100 birthday will be memorable, but Plantation parks staff & CA Catering made sure Norma Fink’s was above and beyond.
Fink, a 43-year city employee, was the reason for a blowout event Tuesday night, with dinner beer & wine, a three-piece jazz band, a proclamation from the mayor, and yes, cake!
Fink works the front desk part-time at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center, so, under prompting by her grandson, Jason Lutin, a grandiose surprise operation was put into place. Tennis players and others arrived at the tennis center at 6 p.m., enjoying music, drinks and chicken piccata, pasta and vegetables under a large party tent. (Mr. Lutin picked up the tab.)
When her family brought her to the party tent around 6:45 p.m., it took her awhile to realize the commotion was for her. A party with cake and tennis players earlier in the morning at the pro shop likely put her off the scent.
Mayor Lynn Stoner’s proclamation included the biographical material. Norma was born in the Bronx, graduated from NYU and in 1944 began a 54-year marriage to Robert Fink, who passed away more than 20 years ago.
She moved to Florida in 1971 and in 1972 moved into a Plantation condo – the same one she lives in today. She began working at the Kennedy Community Center’s hut in 1978, then moved over to the Veltri Center when it opened in 1981, working as a court attendant and playing in many leagues.
Most importantly, she’s known for being a good person to converse with, and shows a giving heart outside of her job, supporting a number of charities and causes. Friends use the word “spunky” a lot when describing her.
Even at 100, though, Fink told WPLG-Ch. 10 that she has no plans to retire.
“I love the job, I love the people, I love the whole thing,” she said.
