Sometimes we need to say what we mean... D'you know what I mean? 🤨

We spend a lot of time trying to interpret (and usually incorrectly) why people do what they do. In guest services our intentions are clear... create incredible experiences for our guests. Intention and action are different though.

We need to be abundantly explicit with our team on what "we" mean and more importantly how we behave to "create incredible experiences for our guests."

I am fortunate to have developed best- in- class guest services programs in amazing San Diego and Southern California sport event venues. In each of these sports facilities.

One of the thrills of working with events is the fact that it is largely a human experience👱‍♀️👨👶. Working with people is, by its nature, dynamic. We cannot create policy or explicit instruction for each interaction. So... guest services professionals must be empowered to make decisions that are in the best interest of the guest, but that are consistent across the org and in alignment with the needs of the event/ venue.

Treat others the way you wish to be treated. ⭐️

The challenge sometimes is people have different definitions, experiences and expectations on what this means. It becomes conditional or circumstantial.

It is important then, to put a team together that understands the organizational expectations (so they can be exceeded) and have the internal capabilities to deliver on it.

Creating a robust guest services program for your sport event venue requires buy in and support from the very top levels of the organization and is executed by the front- of- house staff on the ground. Guests measure the success of an event in emotional currency

🧡 Did they have fun?
🧡 Were they treated with respect?
🧡 Will this experience be a meaningful memory for their kids?
🧡 What does this experience symbolize?

Most of these feelings are a result of the way we treat our guests- not the action on the court or the give- away in their pocket.

Is your frontline staffed positioned to exceed expectations and deliver? If not, it's likely due to organizational shortcomings rather than individual failures.

In my sport event venues career, I have had the opportunity to create three different guest services programs for three different event venues in San Diego, Chula Vista and Long Beach. Each venue was unique in terms of venue operations, guest expectations and staff culture.

The “unmade future” 🔮

The thought that a future idea doesn’t just live inside of us waiting to be uncovered. Rather... creativity is a process and that idea is a result of that specific process.

There are ways to foster and develop a creative environment. I see that in the dynamic between event venues and event organizers and have recently experienced it in the growth and development of Stylehawk.

Creating safe event environments for our staff and attendees is critical. People want to feel secure at events. In fact, perceived safety is a purchasing decision for many these days... Sometimes though... events and venues implement ceremonial security mechanisms rather than functional measures. This is counter- productive and can leave you incredibly vulnerable...

How many of you have been told you are over- qualified for a job.. 🤔?

I think that is par for the course for most of us in the event and venue management business. That is because by nature, it is multi- disciplinary vocation. Every day is a different and as a result we develop a broad set of skills 🧰.

The event and venue management business is an alluring line of work. There are always lots of questions when I tell people what I do for a living, which is fun at parties.

A Little Bit About Stylehawk Event Services

Let’s be honest… Along with excitement and inspiration, event promotion carries significant risk. This business is for the bold and determined.

Effective events have tremendous financial and social upside. The path to profitability however, is not always clear. I witnessed this first- hand in my work as a sports event venue operator. I saw hundreds of smart event organizers create super cool event concepts that failed to generate profit.

Cool events that lose money are not sustainable.

It took me a while to figure out how to articulate this, but once I discovered it, everything came into focus…
