Hurricane Ian may have severely damaged Lovers Key but it didn't take our spirit! It gave us new, gorgeous photo locations to work with including the mud flats at low tide, underneath the south beach bridge, a bay view for ceremony locations and many more! Our FIRST wedding since Hurricane Ian hit our park as a category 5 hurricane, 1.5 years ago. We are over joyed to book ceremonies again.

An update from Park Manager, Katie Moses

Dear Friends of Lovers Key,

Lovers Key State Park is making strides in the recovery process thanks to the fantastic Department of Environmental Protection’s leadership, Friends of Lovers Key, local community organizations and the park’s staff and amazing team of volunteers!

A debris removal contractor has been hired and begun the process to remove the extensive debris throughout the park, clear debris off the beach, out of the waterways and demolish structures which sustained catastrophic damage.

Each day I work at the park I am amazed at the power of nature. Beyond what a 15 foot storm surge can do but the resiliency of flora and fauna within the park. In the first few weeks after Ian, wildlife was scarce to see and vegetation began turning brown from the saltwater intrusion. Then it seemed overnight the vegetation started sprouting new green growth, wildlife started becoming more apparent within the park and we have even spotted some gopher tortoises!

The importance of state parks also has inspired myself and the staff to love Lovers Key even more. The beach island of the park sustained the brunt of the storm surge. However, the mangrove islands did their job of mitigating the rush of water and waves so the rest of the park had significant damage but not as bad as the beachfront island, Lovers Key. Because of those mangroves some structures in the park remain structurally sound and will still need repairs. The entire park was under at least 7-8 feet of water. Due to the storm surge the park’s electrical infrastructure is going to need significant work as well as the sewer lines and lift stations.

We are in process of hiring all the contractors needed to bring Lovers Key back to a point to welcome volunteer and visitors back to the park. There is not yet a timeline or date for reopening our beloved park as we need to complete basic infrastructure projects and remove the safety hazards throughout the park.

The staff cannot wait to see you all enjoying our beloved park again! We thank you so much for your kind words, encouragement and support!
