If the airline cancels the flight or changes the schedule, you could get a credit or refund. But if you cancel the ticket yourself, you won’t be able to get any compensation.

The best time to book a cheaper flight within the U.S. is usually on a Tuesday around 3 p.m. East coast time, 4 p.m. Central, or 12 p.m. Pacific. Many airlines release weekly airfare sales early Tuesday morning, until around mid-afternoon. You can use a travel site (Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline, etc.) to search flights, then go directly to the airline site with the lowest fare to book directly. Hint: Sometimes airlines have even more savings or "hidden" flights that aren't published on the travel sites.
