We are SO excited about our new featured gallery artist (come check out the grand opening of her exhibition at the August Night Market on Wednesday, August 21 from 6-9pm).

Nicole or “Cole” Marie Metzger is a New Haven resident who grew up mostly in Huntington,
Indiana.

Metzger has been studying art for multiple decades, now. In 2013 she earned a Bachelor of Arts
from IPFW to teach K-12 Art. In 2019, she returned to PFW and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Art with a concentration in painting.

Currently, Metzger manages the local art at Old Crown where she’s been working for 15 years.

This exhibition entitled “Window” is a compilation of oil paintings Metzger completed while earning her BFA while juggling the drudges of life and family crisis throughout the Covid 19
pandemic.

“I spend most of my time daydreaming about art. I think about what I want to make and how I’d rather be creating art than whatever else it is that I’m doing. All aspects of my life I will somehow
imagine into a painting. In this exhibition in particular, one can see that even banal details are
capable of inspiring a visual story about my unique experience...My existence as an artist who
struggles to balance exhausting responsibilities of life and the battle to find time to release creative energy that builds up inside of me over time. For my BFA thesis project, I spent a lot of time looking at where I invested much of my time, so I could better manage my creative pursuits.

The show is a decent look into my artistic soul, but I know there’s so much more inside to explore. Enjoy this little “window”.”

Originally built as a bank in 1962, 3308 N Anthony Blvd started a new life in 2019 as the creative arts venue that it is today. Its creative programming and physical design come from the minds of Founders Chad & Lesa Van Meter. For about 20 years between being a bank and transitioning to The Garden venue, the property also served as the offices of Holy Cross Church and School. Holy Cross is still an active partner in helping us love our neighborhood and serve creatives in the ‘05.

You probably either know us as a venue available the public to rent for or as people committed to cultivating community through the .

But we’ve also got a few side projects going on that may be of interest to you — one of which is our .

Just check out our veggie babies!

When we took over the property in June 2019, we decided to do three specific things with our :

1. Add as much life and green as possible so nature could beautify the venue
2. Introduce and
3. Convert generically landscaped areas into intentional food-producing land

Our first major gamble was betting on the fruitfulness of the space and on the SE side of the building. And thankfully, as we have discovered, it’s an ideal environment for an urban garden.

A huge shout out to Atom Acres Family Farm, Jamie Howard and Phyllie Farms who have all offered their wisdom at various stages and levels to guide the urban garden’s success.

And there have been lots of other individuals and businesses along the way who have donated flowers, vegetable seeds, soil, gloves and more. Our Urban Garden Volunteer Coordinator Jamie Howard has been carefully growing starters in our during the winter and spring months so that we could hit the ground running in 2024!

📣 Now we need YOUR help!

🧑‍🌾 If you love gardening or volunteering or being outside, WE NEED YOU! Don’t want to do it alone? BRING YOUR FRIENDS! BRING YOUR KIDS! If you have always wanted to learn more about but don’t know where to start, our baby is a great place to start.

Please comment or DM us to get involved however you feel comfortable. Or reach out on our web site at TheGardenFortWayne.com.

Some tasks we could really use volunteers for include:
🪴 the potted and flowers twice a week
🎋 the raised beds once a month
💦 Watering the once a week
🍅 ripe crop on Fridays and replanting seeds/starter plants when necessary
🚗 Delivering the harvest to shelter
🛒 Buying something for us from our wish-list at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1RFAGNPQGGIC8/ref=hz_ls_biz_ex
💰 Donating to our overall urban garden fund at https://checkout.square.site/merchant/MLZFWDP4Q5N1Q/checkout/WOKQQCIGI7FUA5V5OMZ3HBTE

Thank you for helping us spread love, hope and in ! We could not accomplish all that we do without the efforts of .

And remember — this garden is open to any of our neighbors in need to harvest from. It was designed as a which means that zero food prep is required after harvest - every veggie we grow can be eaten straight out of the ground. The bounty of the harvest is donated to the homeless families in the Just Neighbors shelter down the road from The Garden in the ‘05.

✨ NEW YOUTH BOOTHS ✨ at our monthly summer Night Markets!

In case you haven’t heard, we are introducing something new at the Night Markets this year — YOUTH BOOTHS.

A very limited quantity of our vendor booths (4, in fact) are available ONLY for kids/youth entrepreneurs (ages 17 and YOUNGER) who want to be a vendor and sell their artwork/creations.

Items they sell are completely up to them. It could be:
🧶 Your middle schooler selling something they crocheted
🖍️ Your kindergartner selling pages they colored from a coloring book
💍 Your 3rd grader selling rings they’ve made out of beads and wire
🎨 Your high schooler selling sketches they doodled

The sky is the limit (with the one exception of no food). If they made it themselves and want to sell it - THIS is a great opportunity for them to do so! It’s a great chance to learn, earn and grow!

The YOUTH BOOTH application is at to https://forms.gle/v4aoBHagNH9PiFf9A

The Google Form contains the application as well as more details which parents will appreciate (discounted rates are given to youth booths as compared to our standard vendor booths).

Any questions can be directed to us via Facebook Messenger or at TheGardenFortWayne.com.

Access Google Forms with a personal Google account or Google Workspace account (for business use).

Have you noticed the shiny new additions to the urban garden on the south side of our building? These raised beds are now in our space thanks to volunteers and Cameron Ruhl of Phyllie Farms. Our urban garden is growing by leaps and bounds.

The Garden exists to build community and foster relationships - we do that in a variety of ways through the creative arts, private rentals of our venue and public events. We consider the creative arts to include horticulture (smaller-scale cultivation).

Urban gardens serve several purposes in a community. For us in the ’05, we are proud to participate in food production on our property by providing fresh vegetables and herbs for any neighbors and local homeless in need. Our walk-around garden concept means that everything we grow can be eaten straight out of the ground with zero food prep required. The bounty/extras from the harvest are donated weekly to Just Neighbors shelter to aid families in crisis. Currently, https://facebook.com/justneighborsihn has 8 families, a total of 26 people in the shelter — 12 adults, 3 babies ages newborn to two, and 11 kids ages 2-23.

Meet Ehlay - Garden Host for Private Rentals + Public Events.

Ehlay has been at The Garden since October 2023. She is hard-working, highly skilled in hospitality, and positive-spirited. Having her on The Garden team means we have someone on our team who is thoughtful, patient and observant.

Ehlay is a first generation immigrant student at University of Saint Francis - Fort Wayne, IN. Her love for art and helping others led her to pursue a passion for Public Relations! I enjoy eating a variety of food and being a cat mom off the clock.

CURRENT OUTDOOR MURAL SPOTLIGHT

TITLE : COME WHAT MAY

Artist Statement: Danyelle Yoder is a deep-thinker and an old soul. She finds inspiration in the principals of life, the music that conveys it honestly and people that carry strength. Her expressive portraits convey a sense of purpose and destiny as if the subjects have risen from turmoil and gained an unshakeable determination. She says, “I am forever inspired by timeless faces, earthy colors and a common story of triumph. I love windows to souls and the resilience behind them. If I can release work that nods to the hardships of life and wrap it with a sense of petrichor then I have done my job.. I call viewers to hope and resilience.”

Mural Statement: Sensing a shift in seasons she faces the heat. Internally bracing. Not turning to hide or run or cower, she’ll stand, come what may.

On the South side of our building, we prep, plant, maintain and harvest a “walk-around-food” urban garden. This garden exists to provide a healthy, free and easy food option for local homeless. Those in need are invited to come pick veggies which are ready to harvest. Intentionally, none of the grown veggies require any prep in order to be eaten. During the summer harvest months, volunteers harvest every Friday and deliver it to Just Neighbors to aid families in crisis.

The Garden

The Garden is an open-concept, creative space and rentable venue, dedicated to creating community and launching local creatives. The space’s tagline “a place to grow” is exactly what they are after. The venue is an indoor-outdoor re-imagining of an old bank building, next to Lassus/Wendy’s on the east side of the street.

The space is part co-creating space, part art gallery/venue, part community incubator. Efforts of the husband-wife creative leadership team (Chad & Lesa Van Meter) are focused on connecting local students, artists, and innovators into community and ultimately into creating a thriving cultural life in the 05.

The couple has lived in the 05 neighborhood for almost 20 years and know well the strengths and needs of the North Anthony Corridor. They are excited to be part of a long history of creative businesses along the Corridor, where local boutique shops have thrived for decades. “We believe this area has great potential to be a critical part of Fort Wayne’s overall urban improvement,” said Chad.

The Garden hopes to bolster particularly the east side of the Corridor. “We have a lot of thriving businesses on the west side of North Anthony, we hope we can facilitate some growth and energy on this side.” Being just 5 minutes from downtown and home to three of our universities, the Corridor really could earn the name "the Gateway to Downtown.” “It feels like the closest thing Fort Wayne has to a Campus Village. We are so proud of this area and hope to encourage many others to recognize this incredible neighborhood.”
