Pro Tip Friday: Reading Topography Charts

Last week’s pro tip talked about how topography affects the game. It’s only within the last several years that tools like these charts have become available to bowlers. Today, we’re going to talk about how to read them.

Topography charts show the overall wear and tear after bowling balls have gone down the lanes for decades. Because there have been relatively few bowling centers built in the last 20-30 years, outside of entertainment centers that aren’t regulated or some newer string pin centers, we know that the lanes are getting older and older. That means we can expect more variation in the surface.

If you look at the graph of the two lanes at Woodland bowl in the chart, you’ll see the difference in the pairs. Red means that there is more wear and tear. You’ll see that the wear is most pronounced in the front of the lane because that’s where balls land. You’ll also notice that the right part of the lane is also considerably more worn. You can think about the red spots as indicators that the ball will hook earlier. This is the reason that a pro might throw a weaker ball. Strong balls could hit a super worn down spot where it hooks instantly and won’t have energy down lane.

Topography isn’t just based on balls hitting the lane. There’s also left to right topography – towards the gutter or away. A lot of times this has to do with the installation. When installed, lanes are screwed down to a foundation. Over time, it’s clear that some lanes are screwed down a little more than others. Lanes could crown (going towards the gutter more) or bowl (like a skating half pipe) where the screws are a tiny bit up and the lanes fold to the middle of the lane. Kegel has done extensive research on lane topography.
