It all started with Kraut.
THE HISTORY. In the early 1900s Franksville Wisconsin was home to one of the largest sauerkraut processing facilities in the country. Cabbage farms in Racine County were booming and the small farming community was known as the sauerkraut capital of the world.
In 1952, A. A. Huppert of the Frank Pure Food Company wanted to celebrate the company's success and decided to hold a picnic for his employees and friends. It was held on the main street in Franksville. The picnic was intended to show what real home-cooked kraut should taste like and to raise money for the local park.
That small company picnic was such a success that a group of local businessmen came together and decided to turn it into a public festival. They sponsored the newly named Kraut Festival and had local church and civic groups involved as a way for them to raise money.
The Kraut Festival featured a Kraut Eating Contest, the coronation of a "Kraut Queen" and was promoted as a good place for friends and family to get together to enjoy polka bands, outdoor dancing, draft beer and of course...sauerkraut.
