To all our Flower Pail friends -
The supply-demand imbalance for flowers is unprecedented and we want to take this opportunity to explain what is causing the tight market conditions and how this is all impacting the days, weeks and months ahead.
Covid: A year ago growers were catastrophically impacted as flower demand collapsed. As a result they pared back production volumes (planted less plants). We are still dealing with the effects, especially now that things are opening back up - High demand, not enough supply.
Logistics: Passenger flights have been dramatically reduced, forcing increased demand to cargo airlines for freight. The result - higher prices for air cargo and less availability for space for perishable items like flowers. Complicating things even more - a lack of truck drivers.
Bouquet Makers: several large scale grower/bouquet makers supplying mass markets have acquired South American farms, thus reducing product available to the florist channel.
Mother Nature: Inclement weather conditions in Columbia and Ecuador recently has further reduced growing or all together destroyed flower farm production.
Loving Flowers: This is great and people buying and sending flowers is at an all time high, plus weddings, events and parties are coming back! The challenge, of course, is that the spiking demand is occurring at the exact time when flower supply is low.
Thank you for you patience and understanding. Please know we are still do everything we can to fill orders to everyones specifications but, there will be times where flexibility is needed so please bare with us. We are hopeful for a more normal supply level in the months ahead!
