Sand Hill Cranes have been called the Modern-day pterodactyls. They are also among the oldest living bird species, having survived for million of years. Their bird call is different than a normal bird, and has a rattle and song combined. In Miller Empey's lifetime they were close to extinction. He was very proud of the pair by the fireplace, and worried that they would be become extinct in his life time. However, In 1918, they became protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty.
